Hi all, going to swop out my transmission mounting rubbers next week for new ones as I suspect they are shot. Can't find amything in the manual or via a google search on this (maybe as its so simple )New ones look like this

I assume they only fit one way?

I also assume I can do this with everything in-situ by loosening nuts and jacking up the trans case, but will I start bending stuff if I do this and where is best to jack up the box? Back of h.brake drum and using a bit of wood under it the other side? Don't want to bend the handbrake or interior doing this!

I'd just stick an axle stand under the box and transfer box to hold it up then remove the gearbox crossmember to change them.

I don't think there is enough room (unless you have a bodylift) to lift the boxes far enough anyway,so crossmember out is probably the best way.

Plus you can check the chassis for rust where the crossmember bolts too. Probably the only place a disco chassis properly rusts away.

Trolley jack under handbrake drum don't even bother lifting it just enough to support is enough. then unbolt crossmember 3 bolts thru chassis on each side IIRC. then undo mounting nuts and pull crossmember down.

just jack transmission up as high as it will go remove gear box mount first and refit t/box one first as you can then lever transmission enough to help , you will need a decent 15mm spanner to remove mount plates from boxes, you dont need to drop crossmember

Thanks James, so I don't do one at a time ;remove in the order you say and have both off at same time, then refit in reverse order?

I have a 15mm cranked ring spanner, would that do the trick or should I buy a C spanner in 15mm (which I haven't got)?

Sorry for all the questions, I have so little time to get under the landy I need to practically guarantee I can do something to the bitter end before I start it!

Cheers

the last few ive done i did out side in the yard with a bottle jack, crossmember is secured by 10 bolts 1 holding front exhaust hangar is quite awkward

Thanks all, I'll just get the impact wrench on standby if I need to remove the crossmember.

I found this pic from the Defender RAVE after searching for ages

I'm guessing I could remove all but the bottom-most cross member bracket and just tap it down to sort of swing it forward/back enough to change the mounts then it would be easy to tap back in place as there would be one bolt locating it still.

I think what has happened on my disco is there is a blow in the exhaust near the mount on passenger side. I can smell burning rubber sometimes when driving and I think the exhaust has fried the mount! I get a really high pitched vibration from the transmission when pulling away at about 30mph in 4th. Suggests the mount may be letting things vibrate a bit. That's the theory anyway, we shall see.
