just striped my gearbox to find the grinding noises

it seems to have a series 2 bell housing and clutch release bearing unit but the gearbox dosnt match the drawing for a s2 i think its a s3 gearbox and transferbox

is this possible ? will the bell housing fit the main box on a 3

ok think i figured it out

i just read somewhere that a few very late 2a were made with an all syncro gearbox with mine has this was then put in the series 3 so now what do i order ?
series 3 gearbox parts or you think they may have changed when they went in the s3

aghhh confused

does anybody have a number or web for landrover history dept

if it's got a "S" stamped on top of the of the GB cover then it's one of the last SII boxs which did have sync on all gears - therefore buy SII bits

but seeing as the cover will also fit the SIII box ......

what year is the vehicle ?

its a 69 s2a ambulance

trouble is with ordering s2 bits i cant find the all syncro drawing for the numbers

i have worked it out on a s3 main box with suffex A

lets hope thats right

I've got a 1970 IIA and that does not have synchromesh on 1st or second. The bellhousings of late IIA gearboxes and SIII gearboxes are interchangeable, because I looked at filling a SIII bellhousing to my IIA box when I was fitting a Transit engine whose starter motor fouled the slave cylinder on the IIA bellhousing. Earlier II/IIA boxes had smaller layshaft bearings I think.

its not the 200 tdi in there itsw a 19j 2.5

im pritty shore its this late 2a all syncro box there is a factery rebuild badge on the top so think i will call lr if anybody has the number

you'll get nowhere phoning LR - look at what letters/numbers are stamped on the casting

right im rebuilding the box now
i have identifyed it as a late 2a main box (s3) with a s2 bell housing and clutch fork
got it all to bits today and took all the gears of the shaft just to conferm what i needed trouble is i need quit a lot more than firt thought
i can get all the parts without to much trouble but its not cheap anymore so before i go and order everything i thought i would see if anybody got a series 3 gearbox they would be willing to sell me

Hi I have a series 2a/3 gearbox in mine. You are best to buy new parts as most series 3 boxes on Ebay etc are well shot. When I rebuilt mine I replaced all bearing, first and second syncro cones, first and second gears(as the dog teeth are very small) and the 3/4 synchro hub. There is a rebuild kit on ebay at the moment. regards Dean

yeah i seen the rebuild kits on there trouble is it dosnt include the main or lay shafts and the 2nd and 3rd gears so would still need those extras
if nobody has got 1 from a conversion or something that would be great i not gonna get 1 from ebay becouse of the reason you mentiond
its not a big problom to get the parts and rebuild just trying to save a few quid and a bit of time
just being lazy lol
