Hi all, hope someone can help me, my series 3' gearbox locks up solid when comming out of reverse, the forward gears can not be selected only reverse, it is not the usual thing of slipping the clutch a bit to select a gear, it feel like something is blocking it, engaging reverse a few times frees it up again!Any advice please!

Hi,

I'd guess its something on the lines of your gear lever isn't pulling the box out of reverse. So box stays in reverse, you select another gear (which I don't think should be possible, cos detent balls are there to stop that ...... but I've had it happen a couple of times). If gearbox is in TWO gears at same time NOTHING will turn.
My first move would be to try and waggle the thingy that the bottom of the gear lever pokes into. I think you can just see it without removing any bodywork. If it waggles, you may be lucky, and its only a couple of loose nuts, or bolts, or both. Next wish is that its only a stripped thead in the clutch housing. Worst is a worn selector, or a selector retaining screw come loose ...... inside the box. Had that on a Mini, sod of a job.

have you been offroad latley?

It could just be a small stone in the selection housing very easily done take turret off only a few bolts and look where the gearstick goes. In fact the worst part of the job is lifting the floor and trans tunnel.

the bolts that hold the selecter shaft to the selecter work loose and give this efect, you will soon lose reverse gear, take the top off the box and tighten the selecter bolts, as said the worst thing is the floor pans

also check there is 2 90 degree ( what looks like brackets ) on the top of the box these hold the detent springs and outer ballbearings in place . these might of gone walkies !

I found the problem, as mentioned the gearlever didn't pull the reverse gear selector shaft fully to the front, due to the o ring that is missing, no other gears can then be selected because of this, fitted a piece of petrolpipe at the end, works fine now! thanks guys!
