So i'm driving home from work this evening and as i lift off the throttle in second gear a knocking noise starts coming from the transmission tunnel. strangely it doesn't seem to happen in every gear, but it does in the majority.
Everything appears fine whilst at idle and accelerating and even at constant velocity, but the trouble begins when lifting off.
puzzlingly it also seems to happen sometimes when the clutch is being depressed.

If anyone has any ideas i would be really appreciative

Oh, its a 200tdi from a disco in my 90, lt77 gearbox i believe

I dont think so, i think it may have been 3rd it was slightly better in, but will take it for a quick spin tomorrow to confirm.

worth checking front diff flange for play too ,oil condition ie metal bits or really dirty with a sheen can indicate problems too

is it better in 4th

 JamesMartin, are you some sort of wizard?! 4th is the only gear in which it makes no noise, i'm really hoping you are going to tell me some quick and painless fix here, however i fear the worst at this moment in time.

Also, regarding the front diff, i replaced that around 2 months ago with a pretty sound replacement so that shouldn't be an issue.

isnt good news in means you have a layshaft issue ,bearing most lokely it need stripping to fix asap unless your scrapping box and getting another

Happy days, looks like a trip round to a mates to borrow the engine hoist..............again.

Having never ventured into the box before, one i get it apart, is it going to be fairly obvious which bits i'm after do you reckon?

And on a separate note, the transfer box whines like a whore when coming off the throttle at motorway speeds, always has, i might as well try and sort that whilst i have it all out, any ideas as to what the usual cause of that might be?

Im feeling like i should probably replace all the gaskets and seals too whilst i'm there to try and stop him leaking all over dads driveway!

The transfer box whine on overrun is almost certainly the PTO bearing especially if you have an old input gear that hasn't been cross drilled. I drilled mine myself last week when I changed the bearing. Basically EP90 can't get to the bearing to lubricate it without this mod and so it eventually collapses. ;)

Cheers dude, You knew the PTO would come into play at some point! 10/10 for perseverance :D
