I'm trying to find out which gearbox and transfer case is in my 1986 Ninety. I have looked up the chassis no. SALLDVAD7A******9 but it seems there are a couple of possible gearboxes. One website I looked at told me: LT85, LT77, LT77S, R380 or other

The only reason I wanted to know was for servicing sake as some gearboxes appear to need different types and amounts of oil, and transfer cases too.

Does anyone know any way to tell which is the exact gearbox and transfer case I have? And does it actually matter or do all the possible gearboxes (LT77 and LT77S etc.) take the same oil and amount of oil anyway?

Also, what are the recommended oil change intervals for these gearboxes and transfer cases? I have struggled to find much servicing information on the internet about Nineties and One Ten's from the eighties (pre the Defender badge). Would anyone recommend a Haynes service manual?

The engine has been transplanted at some point in it's life, but the chassis no. seems to suggest that the original engine was the 2.5L Petrol, as that's what it says on all the chassis no. sites I've searched on. I've talked to serious Land Rover men at my 4x4 club and they thought it would probably have had the petrol engine originally as apparently quite a few of these were brought into New Zealand.

Thanks for your reply, I am pretty sure then that it is the LT77. What would the transfer case be if this is the gearbox, and does anyone know the oil change intervals for this gearbox?

Thanks very much.

regular for gearbox at least yearly unless high mileage in which case more often ,i do same with transfer box ,your t/box is lt230 and will either be 1.6 or 1.4 ,check numbers on back first 3 digits give type ie 20d 1.667 22d 1.4410

Transfer Box seems to be LT230 according to sites I looked at.

Have managed to find this info from various sites:

Oil for Gearboxes - The mainbox (LT77) needs ATF and the Transfer Box (LT230) needs EP80/90 or EP90

This list is from a UK site called Dingocroft, and shows the amount of oil needed and the recommended Land Rover, Penrite and Comma Oils for each part.

LT77 – 2.4L of oil - L/Rover ATF Dexron IID, Comma Oils ATF Dexron2

Differentials Rover type - 1.7L each – Penrite Hypoid 80W90, L/Rover EP90 to API GL4, Comma Oils H90 EP90

Transfer box - 3.1L – Penrite Gearoil 30, L/Rover ATF Dexron IID, Comma Oils ATF Dexron2

Does this all sound like it checks out for a 1986 2.5L petrol Ninety? Which of the above oils would users of this site recommend?

Personally I think that if your happy that the oil is of a high quality the particular brand isn't especially important for a 20+ year old Landy.

For example I buy Valtra oils from my local agricultural engineering place and have been very happy with them.

I am not so worried about the brand, just that I put the correct type of oil in each part. I would hate to gum everything up by using oil that is too thick etc.
