Neighbour from hell ............. trying to help a chap not far from me with his P38 owned for a week or so gearbox will not select any gear hi or lo range. gearbox fault on display ! looked at gearbox and looks like a recent gearbox has been fitted and this was confirmed by owner. He confirms that gearbox was working and drove home from it's previous owner untill he tried to select lo range whilst driving at speed . I know zilch about auto box's but don't think Lucas additive will work here. To make matters worse he speaks very poor English and conversations are a nightmare hope this info will not put wammers off any input :D any ideas please ?

Low range selection should be inhibited at speed. Get it on diagnostics. Sounds like transfer box is stuck in neutral.

Appreciate your thoughts wammers / datatek How would I know if transfer box was stuck in N  Is it a defo diagnostics job or any preliminary checks that can be done ?

You can only hope an ECU has thrown a wobbler and shut down. If the transfer box had tried to engage low axle there would have been a very loud sound of tortured metal. Ask him just what he did and what he heard.

Would it be worth changing ecu as i have a spare from 95 petrol auto box the car in question is 00 diesel is it the same ? If yes will diagnostics then be needed for replacement ecu ?
Thanks in advance
BTW any interpreters Romanian language

When selecting drive or reverse i can hear a whirring sound :)
If you take the transfer box motor off, you can manually turn the selector shaft to see if it will engage, or you can drive the motor directly from 12 volts with the connector unplugged.
WTF was he trying to do selecting low range at speed?

Cheers datatek, your guess is as good as mine when I asked that question all I got was shrugged shoulders and a grin  will try your suggestion do not plan spending to much time as the car is a skip and he keeps saying he needs to get it to his country. Apparently making big bucks in Romania can't imagine there will be any profit after fuel etc and of course if it ever rolls again.

Tem că nu vorbesc românește.

:hysterically_laughi

What is that translated "it's fecked" ?

"Afraid i do not speak Romanian" Oh and by the way why would i not respond if the person does not speak English? I answer Scousers, Geordies, Jocks, Taffs, Mancs, Brummies and even people from the west country and they don't speak English. :):)

Update : cheers lads for your time, and after removing transfer box motor and a bit of poking around I was fed up working in the lashing rain so decided to replace motor and give up and i'ts now working hi and lo box all seems sweet. looks like it may be making a journey to Bucharest  rather him than me
Thanks Again I did not have a bloody clue what I was doing
