I have a great 2.25 petrol 90 from 1984 SWB pick up.

It drives well and is comfortable yet there is great high frequency, low magnitude vibration of the gear stick in 3rd gear (high). (five forward gears in the gearbox) .

The suspension is good with new springs. The tyres are in need of replacing.

Any ideas/tips?

in fact it is 3rd gear and 5th gear, so perhaps it is the layshaft bearings that need to be replaced. Is this a complicated (expensive?( job? thanks

not necessarily expensive, but probably need special tools allthough some boxes parts arent to tight and can be pulled off relatively easily but most need special pullers for seal collar ,5th gear layshaft,5th gear synchro, recon box is above/below £400,but if only bearings for layshaft £10 + labour

think i'd sort the tyres and get the wheels balanced before pondering ripping what might be a good GB apart ?

thanks. i will get some new BF Goodrich tyres and then see. A local garage I know will be able to change out the bearing quite cheap i hope.

i wouldnt change tyres to prove vibration point if info about not doing it in 4th is correct, iwas agreeing in general vibration in a gear above and below one that doesnt is fairly diagnostic ,vibrating getting worse speeding up and maybe pulling past that point but not coming back is indicative of poor tyres

it is all the forward 5 gears vibrate. it is annoying and i think for the smallish out lay to get the layshaft bearings replaced this 1984 SWB will drive like a much newer (quieter car) yes the tyres could do with an update too!

the vibration happens at high revs, meaning it is more of a problem in 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Yet a problem in all 5 gears.

if its in all 5 gears then that ,may be lots of other causes ,try it and report back with actual symptoms noise and any vibration etc

I sense there is a greasing point at the base of the gear stick that may need to be regreased as a solution to this problem. can someone guide me on how i gain access to achieve this?

in each gear there is a resonant frequency in which the gear stick resonates making quite a noise, and making the car drive like an old car. in the lower gears the resonance takes place at low speeds, forcing a change up. in gear 5 it takes place at 50-60 depending on whether we are driving up or down hill.
