gear selector light not corrasponding to gear

just a few Q for the men in the know
firstly when i select drive the light at the side of the D goes to 3 but it says D on the desplay and when i go in to 3 the light goes to p ect.ect any ideas
secondly whats the best way to test a altanator i was driving home from skeg vagas had to stop to fill the beast up when i came to start her it would not start it was a foggy day so had lights on blower ect on just wanted to check before i buy a new one if i had to

A multi-meter and an amp clamp......if you stated your location in your profile someone maybe able to help....
