gear selector jamming

I have managed to get hold of the God of Land Rovers, at least in this neck of the woods, Harry Grawall.
He said that the bias plate had shifted causing the first issue and shifted again to cause the second.
He said they are adjustable.
I can't see how they are adjustable but can understand some deforming/wear with age so I am going to buy a new plate and fit it.
There can't be anything else as all transmission specialists including David Ashcroft confirm that there is nothing within the box except possible lay shaft shear that will cause it but they have ruled that out.

SO... When I fit the bias plate what's the secret of getting it in the right place? I believe I need to do the front two bolts up first before fitting the other bolts and springs.
What's the trick to getting the springs into place?

If this doesn't work it's going to auction!!!

Thanks in anticipation
Jon

bias plate is adjustable its on slotted holes 5th is toward the right and up rev down ,but wont go down until levers beenm pushed over to the left the back to the right to stop you going 5th to rev ,easiest to fit springs while top is off box start all bolts leave loose push lever forward and use mole grips to bend sprin past lever rh one first then lh one ,you will have to explain symptoms clearly ,lay shaft shear is bollocks it doesnt effect action of gear stick just loss of drive by 5th and or reverse depending on were it snaps ,bias plate is adjusted so that with top gear stick on when pushed from side to side and released it springs into 3rd 4th alignment ,there are several reasons why a gear cant be selected inside the box ,loose yoke grub screw ,broken interlock ,brocken synchro spring ,grovves in lower lever form just below flange on lever and are easy missed

Thanks
The grub screw problem came up somewhere else when i was researching. Somoeone found it in trhe bottom. Where is the yoke and how do I check that before I start putting it all back together just to eliminate that fault. I suspect the other faults will need the box being dismantled and I'm afraid I don't have the skills, tools, time, inclination to do that.
Thanks again
J

yoke is staring at you when top is removed ,didnt think you would be able to repair box itself ,jujst pointing out internal faults can cause issues to operation of gear stick ,what symptoms did you give to ashcrofts and the other

I explained about hard to get into 2nd, 4th and reverse and then had to force out of gear then when I took cover box off bias plate it changed to all ok except no 5th.
Ashcroft said I moved something in selector mechanism

Harry Grawall said bias plate as soon as I mentioned 2nd, 4th, rev problem and when I said about change to 5th he said, plate has moved needs to be adjusted.
Then I looked up adjustmenbt method on the Rave prog I have.
Does that make sense?

What does the yoke look like?

screw has taper on the end ,bias plate wont make gear sifting stiff just awkward for 3rd and 4th as 1st and 2nd you push lever all the way over to left and then forward or back ,5th and reverse over all the way to right then forward or back ,unless upright tab has broken off and is jamming lower lever ,so all gears can be selected with gear box top sat back on but not 5th ?

Cheers James. I will fit new bias plate when it arrives and see how it goes. If not then F it I'll trade it in against something. Shame it's a good car considering age and mileage.

when you look in top of box 5th is directl below you can see dog teeth and selector hub ,try all gears by hand with a long screw driver or similar ,you can see gate that a pin on bottom of yoke runs in

I've manipulated the lower selector by hand and can get all gears except 5th. I've tried to push the selector onto fifth with a lever to no avail but wondered if I needed to spin the box a little in case things weren't lining up.
I can rotate the dog teeth a little with a screwdriver from above but didn't want to mess too much

while youve got top off just pop interlock out and ensure its not got a piece broken off (pear drop shape with single bolt holding it just in front of opening

no only if you may need to move interlock collar on shaft forwards or back to refit should have a shoulder directly below hole the spigot locates
