Hi everyone, the other day I was taking my s3 for its MOT, and I took a little detour just for fun. Eventually i had to turn around, but after being in reverse it suddenly refused to go into any forward gears. It was only after ten minutes of persistance, with rain dripping through the soft top, that I eventually got it into gear. Once it was in forward gear everything seemed normal again, and I got it to the garage with no probs.

When I spoke to the mechanic later on he said he'd had the same problem trying to go forward after reversing, and he didn't think it was a problem with the clutch.

Just wondering if anyone's had a similar problem. Any ideas? thanks in advance.

Also meant to mention that was the first time the landy's driven more than twenty metres in about four years, so I'm wondering if a decent drive has made something in the gearbox give up the ghost

check detent sprongs/balls and selector shafts arent sticking etc ,its possible with wear on end of gear stick and not free moving selector shafts for you to move out of one jaw and into another with out selector been in neutral position fully ,interlocks then stop you selecting a gear until shaft is properly aligned

Ok thanks for that. I don't know much about gearboxes etc so this'll be a bit of a learning curve... Is it easy to access? Do you go from above or below?

Ok cheers. It's still at the garage at the mo so I'll have to wait a couple of days before I can have a look. I'll let you know how I get on.

remove tunnel ,detents are below 1 brass screw on top and 2 l shaped plates one either side ,just ensure all 3 jaws line up fully ,shfts may be a little stiff detent springs /balls not as free to move shafts ,when shaft is near neutral detent should in theory pull it completely in ,without other shafts wont move
