gear changing on my Tdi auto

is there a way of adjusting the gear change timings on an auto box? 'cos my old girl goes up 1st 2nd 3rd, holds for a bit, then straight into 5th! goes straight past 4th, doesn't collect 200 quid, nuffin'. She drops in occaisionaly, but not for very long, maybe 2 or 3 secs, sometimes less.
Iv'e seen a pivot bracket, located to the side of the fuel pump, with a cable that goes down to the gear-box, and there are 4 or 5 holes numbered 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 to which the cable is attached. Does this have anything to do with the selection of gears whilst driving?

you will find that the auto box is only a 4 speed unit

Try a gearbox oil change, they reckon that there's a filter that needs changing too which could be the cause of your problem!
