Gear box removal

i am in the process of removing my clutch, i am in the stage of removing the gear box, i have removed both right and left drive shafts as instructed by the manual, do i have to remove the IRD unit? or is there a way around it? i am using the Haynes manual but is not very clear

any advice is welcomed and appreciated thanks

It depends on the engine but the IRD will need to be unbolted from the gearbox. I normaly unbolt the IRD and move it aside.

I recently renewed the clutch on my W reg XeDi and had a right game removing the gearbox. I unbolted the IRD and shifted it to one side but then had difficulty finding the elusive last bolt to undo to remove the gearbox. If I was doing it for the first time, I would probably remove the IRD completely so that you can see all the G/box bolts.

Some people on here swear by dropping the front sub-frame which would make the job much easier but you would have to get the front up on stands. If you are doing the job on your own you will need an engine hoist to lower G/Box. Apart from finding the bolts the job is pretty easy, just tedious and time consuming. Tackle it a bit at a time and it won't seem so bad. Hope you will be working in doors!

What do you mean by move it aside there doesn't seem any room to move it anywhere? :S

yes disconnect the ird, and tie it up out of the way, otherwise you will need to drain the coolant and disconnect the cooling hoses,

well getting back on it 2moz if this snow holds off let you know how it goes
