Been away towing the caravan this week with my 200 tdi and noticed after a while there was a tremendous amount of heat coming from the gear box tunnel.I dont have carpets in at the moment but the sound insulation is still on the tunnel so i dont know if the lack of carpets made the heat more noticable. I checked all the oils before i set off transfer box , gear box etc. There were no gear selection problems etc and the old girl sat quite happily at 55 to 60 up hill and down dale.Is this amount of heat normal or does it indicate worn gears or bearings in one of the boxes.

It's a combination of heat from the engine with hot air blowing back, gear/t box heat and maybe exhaust heat rising up through the floor, for me that lots of heat from an auto box especially when traffic on a hot day that's with carpets fitted.. But not a problem with a/c but with out it would mean having the windows open.

But if this is something you have just noticed then u may have a problem if it's "tremendous".

Yeah had the windows open most of the journey. Not noticed it before as i not towed 100 mile non stop with it before usually on local trips with horse box or trailer.

Checked everything over i could lying underneath it in a field all fine, engine temp was ok throughout the trip (glad i fitted an electric fan the week before ) and no odd smells apart from my feet sweating that is.

Sounds about right to me, what with the radiator and intercooler dissipating heat at a huge rate most of which goes under the vehicle, then the exhaust which on mine does warm up the rear floor. Also all the gears and what have you whizzing round all produce heat, which is why in some markets the manual gearbox is fitted with an oil cooler. I feel that getting everything good and hot does the mechanicals a power of good, so go tugging more often.
