Gear box drain plug r380

Im currently working my way through changing all the oil in my Landy and have found that some monkey has swung off the spanner when tightening the gearbox drain plug. I have a 32mm ring spanner and have tryed shocking it but am worried it will strip the thread out the hole. Any ideas cos for the time being I have toped the g box fluid up and when it dribled out of the filler plug hole it came out looking rather brown and burnt. Its definatly atf its just probably the origional atf! Last thing I want to do is to drop the g box off to repair or replace it cos ive shaged the thread

If you're using a 'normal' 12 point socket/spanner, do a search for a hex (6 point) surface drive socket ... they don't round off corners and can be used when corners have been rounded off. Cost a lot, but worth it, IMHO.

Can you get 6 point ring spanners? Socket and ratchet wont fit between g box and chassis. Its not slipping or rounding the plug its just stuck like a bugger

Try pipe grips the ones that tighten up as you turn them .

Gripin it aint realy a problem with the ring end of the spanner. The spanner im using is 14" long and wos delicatly twoted one with a 16oz claw hammer and it still didn't budge. The spanner never sliped off or knackered the nut so it hit another 6 or 7 times with nowt budging. I thought about heating it up but dint know if it would knacker owt and then thought that the oil would probably transfer most of the heat away anyway.

Might sound daft, but try tightening it a smidge, then swinging on it to loosen.

Sounds like a plan. Try and brake the seal between casing thred and plug or whatever it making it stick. Hold on a moment I'm going to brave the cold

Ouch.... just bashed me heeeeed on an out rigger. Ow ow ow big lump. Any way it aint as cold out as I thought. I lifted me big fat behind off the drive putting pressure in the do it up direction and then tryed undoing it and all that happend was I farted. Probably didn't need to know that bit but you never know what information might be useful? I then clouted it a bunch of times with the hammer again to no avail. I can see the copper washer between the plug and casing but if it more than 20 thou thick I'll eat ma hat. Some one went to town tightening it up the Bastids. Ive got a can of freeze spray rolling round the garage so I'll empty the tin on the casing round the plug and then just give it some. Its got to come out cos its crunching between gears and I aint suprised after seeing the state of the fluid.

Yeah, sounds like you need a longer spanner, and a foam cap ...

Just a thought. Surely you need to heat the surround to expand the surround and freeze the plug to reduce the size of the plug. or have I got it wrong?

Good point! Im confused now. Freeze the plug and it will shrink. Freeze the casing and the hole in the casing shrings which is not what I need. Well done * <----Thats a gold star for ya

You do sound like you're havin' fun !!!

You know that you need more leverage, so if you have spanners that are open ended, why not put your normal spanner on the nut and on the other end loop on a ring spanner. That'll double the length of yer lever moiy dear!!

That sounds like a recipe for bleeding fingers. Ill give it a go tommorow. Dont think the people on my street want to be woken up by the sound of my screams and bad language tonight

You're right you do have to do it carefully, but as soon as you a have tiny bit of movement, you're off and running with your normal single spanner.

The way I did mine was with heat mate, only applies the torch to the 'barrel' that the plug is screwed into for about 20seconds and it come undone first go after that.

I use a pair of 'Stilsons' - the tighten as you put move leverage on them !!!

One of my mates dilled and tapped the nut, and fitted a small allen grub screw to act as a drain - avoids the problem in the future !!!

What you need to do is get a meter long scafold pole, put it over the end of the spanner. Even if Jeff Capes did the bolt up, that will undo it !
