Hi everyone,

I just stumbled across this forum on the interweb, so I thought I'd best sign up and introduce myself...

My name is Leon, I live in Townsville, North Queensland. I've been here for about 10 years, and have tried to get out and about and see some of the sights that this area has to offer.

About 12 years ago I had a fantastic little SIII SWB with the original 2.25L motor, but I was a struggling student at the time, and had to sell the car to fund my move to NQ for work. I was gutted, I always loved land rovers, and I thought I'd never be able to replace that car...

Until a few days ago, when I suddenly became the owner of an immaculate, modified SIII LWB. This vehicle is mint, with heaps of great mods like extra fans, fuel pumps, split rims, 110 axles and diffs, twin long range tanks, water tank, and a bunch of other cool goodies. And it is running a 186 holden motor, which is mod I was opposed to in the past, but it ain't too bad. Like I said earlier, I never thought a landie would be better than my old rig, but this machine has already won my heart after just a few days. I should mention - this vehicle was a christmas gift from a friend, who new I was always eyeing it off - I still have been unable to speak since he gave it to me. He knows I'm a landy nut so he is confident it has gone to a good home.

My plans with the machine are to use it as a daily dirver around town, and once I gain some confidence in it, the trips will begin... I am planning to some of the more legendary off road treks north Queensland has to offer.

Other stuff about me... I am a motorcycle nut also, I have raced road bikes in the FNQ and NQ series for many years, but have retired this year from that to pursue enduro racing in 2007. I currently have BMW R1200GS dual sport bike, and my mrs has a KLE500, which we trek around on and off road around north Queensland. Our most recent trip was to Lawn Hill National Park, near the centre of Australia, in November, and it was pretty extreme!

Speaking of National Parks, I work for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, as a wildlife ranger, dealing with dangerous wildlife, and law enforcement with people and companies having unlawful "interactions" with native animals. I enjoy my job immensely as it gets me all over NQ, and points me in the direction of some top spots.

So that's me in summary. Looking around this forum there are some great resources, and I will no doubt draw on them as I get to know the landy a bit better, and hopefully I can throw some reports together for you guys.

I even hope I can help some of you if you are ever visiting my end of the world.

I'm looking forward to this forum, and I'll no doubt catch you around!:)

Cheers

Leon

Welcome Leon - nice Series! (shame about the engine though).
He must be some mate to buy you a Landy for a Christmas pressie - the best I got from a mate was a bar of chocolate!
I'm sort of a wildlife ranger too - amateur / part time gamekeeper, but I only cover 600 acres - I bet that's a lot less ground than you. At least I don't have any dangerous animals to deal with, unless you count Ramblers.
All the best.

Any old how, maybe you could set my mind at rest by answering a technical question. You know Christmas cards right, well in Australia do they have the same ones we have over here, you know the twee ones with rose tinted glasses Victorian snowy winter Christmas scenes on them?

i saw michael palin demonstrate it on the telly.
he was at the equator - a few yards north & it went one way, then he moved the other side of the line and it went the other way.

hi and welcome. are you anywhere near cairns?

Hi. Yeah I don't live too far from Cairns. It's about 4 hours north of here via the main highway. It's a lovely area up there, coral reef, rainforest, mountain ranges and savanna all within a stones throw of each other. I go there often on the bikes and for racing, and I am looking forward to heading up there in the landy once the wet season has slowed down a bit.

Funnily enough - yes we do! You get the odd one of santa wearing shorts and standing near a kangaroo, but they are the exception. I'm STILL dreaming of a white christmas, but at 38 degrees on chrissy day, I doubt it's going to happen any time soon...;)
