my series 111 2 1/4 smokes like billy O,went for it's M O T last week and failed on excessive smoke(surprise surpise)the local garage disconnected the servo(don't know what they did)and it cut the smoke down by 60% and it passed ,they put the servo back and it now smokes nearly as bad!!!Surely something is wrong and can be put right but what, help please !!

sorry diesel, tried running with out air filter(oil bath)connected seems to run better when hot and moving(no smoke as such)but when ticking over nearly as bad as before!!!garage say don't worry but not been much help really,it's not black smoke sort of whitish, had injectors looked at and all ok ,diesel pump refurvished,!!

Do you have the silly butterfly flap in the inlet manifold ? If so is there lots of wear in the spindle and hole it runs in ie can you wobble it up and down where the throttle rod goes in. This will allow air in when you touch the throttle and bugger up any pump settings. Ive blanked mine off and dissconected the throttle rod to the butterfly and fitted an electric vacuum pump basicly running from the brake light switch via a relay when you brake. This sorted all sorts of previous problems.

If the idle speed is too high a diesel with servo will smoke. The reason is that at idle the servo valve is shut and all the air consumed by the engine must pass through the small hole in the flap. Disconnecting the servo will allow air to enter the system through the non-return valve - and a little more air solves the problem.

Real answer is to slow the idle. Unscrew the (head points downwards) idle stop screw - till the vehicle nearly shakes itself to bits - then speed up till it just runs smoothly and the problem should be sorted.

Make sure the linkage is adjusted tight - so the flap opens immediately the throttle is touched. The flap must shut at idle for the servo to work.

The Inlet butterfly should be adjusted so that it opens just ahead of the throttle opening and closes just before. This reduces smoke when you first load the engine and also improves the effectiveness of the brake vacuum

Check inside your vac pipe for brake fluid if the master cyl leaks into the servo fluid can end up in the intake. If that is ok set your idle speed and adjust the flap.
