Hi, I just got a price for getting my D1 chassis galvanised at 150 +vat seems ok. But he said if I have other things to get galvanised at teh same time it will bring the cost down. I may be getting carried away here but now I'm thinking about getting my inner front arches, sills, rear crossmember, boot floor and rear arches all done when replacing them.
I have no idea how much this will all add on just looking for thoughts. It might be worth it as Im looking to build a new disco that will last another 20 years as im sick of the over complicated D3. Its easy to get carried away ....I wonder how much to galvanise the whole body!!!!!!!!

But you can galv all the other steel bits if you manage to get them off in good condition. Get your spot weld drill and your cutting/seperating gear and toolbox ready, then tidy all the panels up/replace using YRM, then re attach.

I was then gonna say re weld also but you cant weld galv can you?

On second thoughts it sounds like a lot of trouble actually, maybe just make sure all the steel is sound (do any welding that needs doing) and then rustex (or other), seam sealer, read oxide, tetra Schultz, waxyoil etc?

You can weld galv, but it gives off highly poisonous fumes. Plus you need to grind off the galv where it has to be welded.
Better off having the sills etc replaced then getting the bottom half of the shell dipped

Wow interesting, Im only an amateur welder and only done mild steel but was led to believe welding galved metal was a no no as it it gave off poisonous fumes unless you ground the galv off (source: an older welder bloke I know and my old man).

I think we all agree it aint good for you. only do it in little bursts and preferable ventilate the area well. gas welding helps.

oh - *& Freelaner - yes - it can give you cold/flu like symptoms, which aint nice. luckily i dont do it professionally.

have you ever welded any? or burnt any?

I have and it makes you feel ill almost straight away.
I take precautions now after seeing 6 grown men run off as i demonstrated fusing/tapering galvy rope to them.

Did you read the link?

Not poisonous, as in no accumulative effect or long term health issue but will give flu-like symptoms for up to 48hrs.

I've always done mine outside and not had a problem but worth being careful

i'm exposed to it quite a lot and make sure the area is well ventilated, no it's not poisonous and it cannot kill you, unless there are other metals/elements present that you don't know are there.
