hi guys,
just loaded the disco with the dogs(4) went back into the facility to collect other stuff to take home , came out to find the fuse box area under the steering wheel pouring smoke out . i removed the cover to see a fire on the top row of fuses, rushed to get my pointers out the back and then get the extingwisherand put it out. i then disconected the battery.
any ideas as to why this happened and is this an insurance case?
thankyou for any input.

Your quick thinking saved the day.
A short circuit is why it's happened but a fuse and even a fusable link should have blown.
Insurance case? post a pic so we all can see the damage otherwise who knows.

Based on a personal experience with a Saab you would have had no problems had the thing being burnt out. In my case they would not pay out for an 'electrical fault' even though me disconnecting the battery would have saved them a wad.

hi guys,
well i got a lift to the farm this morning:). got all the feeding done and had a look inside the disco, yuk, all white powder everywhere. so spent most of the day cleaning up the mess. connected the battery up and hey presto the vehicle started up. drove it around the farm and all seemed well, until later when i noticed the rear window heater light was on( no keys in ignition) so i removed the fuse for that. then i fired her up again and front and back window wipers came on without using ths stalk controls!!!! so i removed the fuses for them and drove home. everything else worked fine , lights inc spots, indicators, central locking etc. now its outside at home i have disconected the battery for the night, so i shall see what is or is not working come the morning.

thankyou for your replies

hi guys,
DSC02197.jpg

this is the fuse box, it is burnt out on the back. all the wires going in are undamaged but there is a copper strip on the back 2" square that has been burnt off.
the vehicle still works fine exept that the wipers , front and back come with the headlights. so i think a new/secondhand fuse box might be in order, then get it looked at professionally i think.
