I got under to have a look where the source of this troublesome leaking red is to find it is coming from one of the two pipes that come from the gearbox area towards the front of the vehicle - they start off thin  metal pipes and become rubber hose type as they turn towards the oil cooler/fan/rad? located behind the left hand grill where fog lights would be.
Further to posts from yella disco and wills, I have checked the power steering reservior and its full and my model is 2000 2.5 hse auto - the transmission filler point shown in wills diagram cannot be found (is this because the manual relates to m/y 1999?) or am I looking in the wrong place?

Any help appreciated, I'm finding small puddles every day!

its prob the auto box cooler pipes then.
cant remember (on your rangie) if they have a seperate cooler or they enter the rad and use the heat exchanger system to cool the fluid.

ps. no idea where the dipstick tube is.

Firstly the dipstick has a big round orange flat top. If you lift your bonnet and look in from the passenger side, you'll see it just behind the engine dipstick towards the back corner of the block. The oil cooler is seperate on the automatic and sits behind where the nearside fog light would be. The metal pipes are prone to fracturing so don't hang about in fixing it, otherwise you'll be sat on the side of the road with oil running down the drain and a red hot gearbox!
