Hi,

My 02 reg TD4 has a funny smell around it only when running, smells slightly oily. Does it right from start, so it isn't oil burning off anything hot.

I first thought a split turbo/intercooler hose, but have replaced all the rubber hoses on the air inlet system, flushed and checked the intercooler for leaks and had a good look around for problems, but cant find anything.
I have also had the inlet manifold off and cleaned/replaced the 8 rubber seals.
The EGR has been removed and replaced with a straight through pipe, but it still smells.

I've followed all the pipes and used a torch trying to see a leak and there are no oily / soot patches anywhere that would signify a leak.

IRD vent is dry, no leaks there.

Anyone got any ideas on where else this could be coming from?

Is it a hot acrid smell? Could be that you have a leaky injector seal. Take a look at the top of the injectors, to see if there are any black/sooty deposits around the injectors.

Good luck

not using oil or any sign of smoke either on start or run.
Changed the antifreeze a few months back, dodnt notice smell or anything in the water when I drained it. The smell was present before then; did the antifreeeze at the same time i did the intercooler flush.

Cant see anything around the injectors either, i assume you mean around the body where it goes into the head rather than on the injectors themselves?
I did a leakback test and very little came out. when i disconnect each injector in turn when its running, they all make idle rough - would a leaky injector seal reduce compression and mean the idle on a leaky cylinder wouldnt be as affected by disconnecting the injector?

is it down on power at all or more fuel consuption?
i would start the engine and take the dip stick out and look and feel for smoke blowing out or a strong smell of burning oil plus do the same with the filler cap you could have a blocked breather or maybe at a push a piston ring gone.
