Right my loverlies, i had a wee think whilst out with the hound today, so i put it to you, the mass of intelligent Landy lovers.

What's the difference between a 200TDi and a 19J other than the head, bottom ladder and a few other wee bits?

Is the crank & cam the same?

Would i be able to use a 19J block with crank, cam, oil pump/gearing etc and fit the 200Tdi parts to it?

Cheers

Seems there is an awful lot of similarities across the 2 engines, crank, cam, cam followers, oil filter head, lift pump to name a few.

i wonder if the headbolts are in the same place.....

If it was that simple people would have been doing it for years, but they haven't so I'm guessing it's not.

A valid point, but if sticking a complete engine in for less than £500 notes and a weekends work, would it be too much hassle for the majority ( ie you don't usually purchase a 200Tdi head on it's own, you get the whole thing )

Will look into it more, from what i can see the block and internals of that side of it are the same, the difference being in the head, bottom ladder and possibly oil pump shaft ( longer in the 200TDi ) plus ancillaries inc injection pump, turbo manifolds etc.

i'm quite excited with this....

What about the top of the pistons?
Directs injections have a cup on top of the piston where as indirect don't.

Direct.

Also wont the top of piston foul the nozzle:confused:

Interesting surmise young paddawan, couldn't ya have rung me n told me :p

Direct do have the dish, the 19J's have a v in them but flat, so it would look like a piston change anorl, but the block itself is the same from what i can gather, this could save me the cost of a rebore and new set of pistons ( if i use the old 200Tdi ones which are oki, bit more cleaning up though)

Also the block is a recon with crank and cam, these 2 areas wont save me havin to drop the crank out to get the pistons swapped ( you can do it without but its a PITA and nigh on impossible to get the con rods past the crank )

Will get some measurements for the pistons in relation to the 19J block.

I have read the 200 block used in 12J & 19J before, both older engines carrying a newer block, will hunt out the link....

bore is same size 3.562 imperial, oil feed for head is on rear of gallery on red block thru front block face on tdi although i think there is a plug in similar place on red block, head bolt thread is different as tdi uses stretch bolts m12,red block 1/2 unf

300, 200, 19j, 12j, 2.25d all use the same block. It's been going on fer fookin ages with the odd modification here and there! I'm guressing things bolt on in different places (certainly true of the 300) so some new holes might be needed - it's gotta be easier just to fit the new one complete hasn't it?

Well yes and no to the fitting. I have a recon 19J atm and a 200Tdi missing some bits ( which the 19J stuff can be used )

For a rebore and new set of pistons, bottom gasket set, crank balance etc etc, the cost of this could be nullified by using the block, crank, cam etc from the 19J to mate to the other stuff i already have n( as they are the same )

The only downside is the time and research against the cost, personally if it can be done, i'll give it a go :D
