Hi,

Just bought a second hand Discovery 2 td5 ES, as i am now living out in the country. Apart from 2 leaky sunroofs (think i have the problem sorted with reading threads) the only other problem seems to be full lock when steering.

Now i'm no mechanic or expert so the answer may be simple to some..........but,

when i'm driving the steering is fine as long as you dont need to use full lock. When you turn a tight corner it's almost as if i have to force the steering wheel to turn that extra bit, my wife cannot do it at all. The power steering fluid is fine as far as i can see. Could it be the wheels catching on the body (it doesn't seem to be when i check) or something more serious?

Any help appreciated even comments relating to how stupid i am (i'm used to it - i used to drive a fiat chichenko......chequento.... oh one of them small things!);)

steering stops? see i knew you would get all technical on me. Best i buy a manual so i can understand this language of technical whizzy things

Aye there is a bolt on the side of the swivel, just adjust them out on both sides till it does not rub.

 good god i really am that thick! i still have no idea what you mean, but tomorrow i will have a look at the wheels and see if i can find this bolt and swivel thing.

My next entry will be from my hospital bed after i mess with the swivel thing then drive away and the wheels fall off!! :D

Once again many thanks but i'm now off to bed to dream swivels and bolts and not rubbing! (oh dear there is a joke in there somewhere)

Hi, just read about your tyre size, and they are ok, my td5 es has 255x55x18s the same as yours so tyres are not a problem. Hope this helps:)

You can't say that.

If HIS tyres are hitting the chassis on lock, then HIS tyres are indeed a problem.

As he has been told, one solution is to adjust the steering lock stop bolts, and the other is to take the tyres off, send them to me, and buy smaller ones.

Even though it should take no more than half an hour to do the lock-stop-bolts, I still think he should send me his tyres.

'force the steering wheel to get that extra bit' sure sounds like something wiff a bit of give stopping it. i.e rubber... and if you have big silly fook orf tyres then yours has probelly bin done already..

and charlesy has it all wrong, he needs to send them to me so i can stick them on ebay and use the proceeds to buy some SAT's

What I am saying is that the tyres are the correct size for the vehicle , they are not oversized. So tyres should not be a problem. If adjustment is necessary on the stop ok but he does not need to fork out for new tyres. Simple enough.

Gents,

Thanks for all your help, i have checked and the tyres do not seem to be rubbing on the body.

I am still confused by this swivel thing so i will bite the bullet and buy a manual unless somebody brighter than me (does'nt take much) can show me a picture of the one i need to adjust.

(one day i will take off my water wings and know what to do!);)

Hi
Are you sure that you are not just expecting it to turn tighter on full lock so are trying to force it?????
Dont know about earlier discos but i have a td5 and the turning circle is not much better than a boeing 747, you just have to get used to it.

That's what i thought at first but if i do pull harder it does turn. For info i have been "experimenting" turning aand it only really seems to happen when i turn right, so it could be i suppose something mechanical. I am getting it serviced next month at a main dealer so i will get them to check and post the answer (if i can still find this thread), and i'm going to do some homework and buy a manual as i now own a proper vehicle i should really know more than just how to fill up the fluids!

You are asking for a wrecked steering box!

NEVER force a power assisted steering box hard on full lock, because (1) it won't go any furthyer than full lock no matter how hard you try and (2) by turning the steering wheel hard against the stops you are forcing the whole power steering system to operate at the very limits of its ability if not past that limit, and something will give, sooner or later.

Be told.
