Hi good to be in the group. I bought my 2004 td4 auto the other day when it arrived on the low loader it started ok. The following day it was a bugger to start spluttering rattling from the top end and then conked out and warning light came on. After a few hours i bled the fuel through and it started again but was rattling when engine was revved up to around 3000rpm then cut out again, i bled the system again and it started again but the same as before, i borrowed my mates diagnostic thingy and it showed up a problem on the fuel rail pressure sensor which i have now ordered along with a fuel filter if anyone has had similar problems and cured them i would love to hear what cures this as i cant use the car at the moment

Welcome to the forum.

The harness to the pressure sensor is a known problem on TD4 - it corrodes. Worth cleaning it up and there is a replacement upgraded harness available.

It could be an actual problem with fuel pressure being to low. The rubber seals on the pressure regulator on the HP pump are another problem area and fail. They are cheap and fairly easy to replace.

Others with info more readily to mind might be able to give more info, but there are threads with info and part numbers on that you can search on (top left of page).

but was rattling when engine was revved up
mine once had a sticking fuel regulator ..
engine would start .. but touch the go-pedal it would shut down
mechanic came along .. disconnected the fuel rail sensor ..
it started and ran when the go-pedal were pressed ..
but it rattled and smoked like crazy .. ;-]

it were a trick to use to-get-home if the hp.regulator failed ..

as has been noted .. try giving the fuel rail sensor plug connections a good clean
water ingress there is a known issue .. causing corrosion in the plug .. and wiring harness
and the voltage there is right small .. 5v down to a few millivolts ..
it don't take much dirt / corrosion to cause a problem ..

mmmmmmmmmmmmm .. easy to replace ??
i went to change mine last year .. i messed up completely .. 'n broke the regulator shaft :-((
the remaining bit be still in the hp.pump .. hippo's been sitting outside fer past 4months ..
now weathers' better .. going to try 'n remove the broken shaft ..
hopefully without leaving bits of nylon or rubber inside the pump ..
could mean having to replace the hp.pump .. :-[[

thanks guys your info is a great help, just bought this for 2000 and noticed that someone had been messing under the bonnet and the ecu box lid had been off and the screws were all hangin out, the air intake pipe to the turbo was all loose so now waiting for new fuel filter, fuel rail pressure sensor, hp pump seals and try again the dealer i bought from assured me it was a beautiful runner and dilivered it to me on a low loader the buggered off quite fast after the deal and i cant get of the Ba erm sod

If it came from a dealer, he has a legal obligation to give a warranty.
I'd be claiming against that and get him to fix it. You paid top money for an FL1, so it should be perfect. Demand he sorts it, or you'll take steps to get it returned for a full refund.

If you do, record all conversations so if you do need to go to small claims court you have evidence of what they have said.
