fuel tank

my 69 2a lwb ambulance has a fuel tank under the seat where you fill straight in the top of the tank by removing the seat but i want to fit a wing fill type tank so ....
am i after a rear fill tank ? does it have to be from an lwb or are the tank sizes all the same ?
moding the rear quarter shouldnt be to much trouble and fitting the pipes and things are a piece of case
i wanna change this in this way so i can fit some better seats with a 2 seat bench and a single for the driver
im not into keeping it as origanal i just need a good usable vehicle

Don't know about series but 90/110 front tanks are different a 110 front tank won't fit a 90 as the 90 has a step in it to get under the front outrigger. Think you'll need to get ya tape measure out?

As far as I can make out you need a station wagon fuel tank. They are the same in the S2, S2a and S3. They mount into the rear crossmember and the crossmember above the rear axle. As far as I can make out they are interchangable but i dont think the 90 or the 110 tanks are the same. Thats not to say they cant be fitted, you know, depending on time, tools and intrest anything can be made to work. But the station wagon tank should fit without any hassle or modification, except for the filler in the right hand quater. Hope this helps.

not sure if i put down exactlly what i ment
my lwb s2a underseat tank fills from the front by taking out the seat base
my old swb s2 1962 that i used to have had a tank under the seat but was filled in the more modern manor by a filler cap in the rear wing
i want to convert the lwb to the same system as the swb as long as the tanks are the same size and mount in the same way then it wont be to hard but i dont know the dimensions of the tanks so does anybody in the know have these messurments or done such a swap

The tank should fit, but you will have to modify the filler as your body is wider.

you can buy ready made bosses for fuel tanks, you'd have to remove the tank wash it out and holesaw a hole then weld on a boss so you can fit a standard filler, well 2 bosses and 2 hoses as you need a breather too, or just fit a 88 tank as mentioned, I dont think the tank of mi 109 would fit an 88 easily, it goes from the axle right to the back of the vehicle.

moding the filler pipe is just a case of some longer pipe work
i will also have to fit a cap bit to the wing so anything that is needed will be made to fit

you'd probably get a cap etc from a breakers.
If you go that route take a tape measure and measure up where you want to be bashing yer holes.

Edit: its an ambulance and doesnt have a rear wing, ok forget what I said about the measuring, a series standard filler might be made to fit though, might be better with a 109, the escutcheon fits onto a flat surface.

Hello Pobby,

The underseat tanks are the sme for the 88 and the 109. I have just fitted a new one to my 109. I have traken some pictures to help you decide which route to go.

This one is of the old tank removed has the filler tube and breater tube to the rear which passes through two holes in the floor behind the seatbase.

This one is of the standard front filler neck position for the underseat tanks, which sits on the curved part of the side panel.

The best option imo would be a filler neck off a 109 with a rear tank, they sit flush to the side of the panel and would fit neatly on the side of the ambulance body, such as the one in the pic below from my spare tub side.

No problem Pobby, glad it helps. Shame you dont live a bit closer you could of had the rear part of the filler neck as i dont need it for mine, then you would just need to cut the opening for it.

its not something im doin right now
im trying to get it through an mot first then i will do some of these little projects next year
got plenty to do with nowhere to do it and no money to do it with so its gonna take a while lol

Tell me bout it mate! my MOT is up in late october so just keepin it goin for now then when it fails its MOT I'll have plenty of time to get down and dirty with it! If only i the daily driver (rover 600ti) would stop costin money I would be alot further with it.
