45 liters if IF its the original tank...run it down to red and fill it up..if you get 40 liters in then its original...if you get wet feet its either smaller or you're very horny.
If you keep filling and filling you've got a big hole in the tank...

Hello everyone does anyone know the exact fuel tank capacity of a defender 90 1997 2.5tdi

thanks alot

louise
Doint worry too much about how many litres it takes... more important, fill up when it touches the red or you make get all sorts of crap sucked into the system.
Side mounted tank (as per 1997 300tdi) all models except Station Wagon 68.2 litres. Station Wagon models 45.5 litres (as per Haynes Manual)

Well, I just put 47.69 litres in our '96 County Station Wagon !

It shouldn't suck in crap, firstly there should be a gauze on the pick up tube, secondly there should be a filter after the feed pump, thirdly the tank swishes around so the sucking in of crap could happen at any time and fourthly there shouldn't be any crap in there in the first place.

Another myth debunked, :D

So why does a station wagon only hold 45.5 litres and lesser models hold more

they dont

Are right i am only asking as it bothers me when peeps give big mpg's and other's seem a lot less just wondering if some peep are not really sure what tank they have i.e. 10g tank or 12g tank so if someone is getting really good mpg but think they have a 10g tank really mite have a 12g tank and other's may think they have a 12g tank but really have a 10g tank so thinking they will be getting really low mpg when it mite be slightly better, in my case i thought i was getting 18 mpg with mine thinking mine was a 12g tank but later found out it was a 10g tank so really i was getting 20 mpg instead, i no there is nothing in it but 2 mpg to someone could make a big difference :)

still think i should be getting more though :(

The size of the tank has no relevance what so ever to a vehicles efficiency.

I managed to cram in 52 litres (from dry to the brim). The only way to accurately measure fuel consumption is by brimming the tank, driving around for as long as you like, re-brim it, take an exact reading of the number of litres / gallons the tank takes to re-brim it, take an accurate reading of the mileage driven and do the math. nowadays, some mobile phone applications cut your work out. you just enter the number of litres, number of miles and it does the math itself.

I know this has been discussed a lot in the past but I have never found a satisfactory answer: the real fuel capacity of a 1996 defender90 300tdi is what? I know the manuals, Liveridge etc say 12 gallons or a tad over 54 litres but I have never got 54 litres in my tank. I ran it down yesterday to the extent (328 miles -an average of just under 30pmg!), that it did not want to start easily and I barely made it 250 metres to the garage. I filled it until the pump cut out and managed to get 49.56 litres in. From this I would have concluded that the capacity was 50L if I had not been told it was 54L so where does the extra gallon fit / go???

My old 2.6 109 you needed to keep a .minimum of quarter
Of a tank filled or it wouldn't go up hills .. tank was so big it would run to other end and be starved of fuel ... bloody thing lol ..

The tank ( 10 gallon ) still holds a gallon of fuel even when the tank is empty meaning the stack pipe will have a gap between the end of the stack pipe and the bottom of the tank that the stack pipe can't suck fuel up which is where the extra gallon of fuel is.

run the tank down to empty on the gauge then drain the tank thats how i found out :(
