Hi,
Just been towed off road by RAC.
Problem intermittent. Drives about 5 miles then cuts out. Leave it a while and it starts?
RAC said not electrical as fire with a squirt of easy start.
Said he thinks it is an intermittent fuel pump problem?

How can I test for this?

Its a P38 4.0 petrol

How big a job is it to replace it and how much are they?

Thanks for any help,
Steve

That looks like quite a bit of improvisation.

Is it difficult to lower the tank!

I had RAVE on CD but cant find the damn thing!

Steve

Lowering the tank can be a royal PITA. I did mine year ago and if the pump went again I'd be going down through the floor without a moments hesitation. The only thing that stopped me the last time was not having dimensions which we now have thanks to Canyon.

I know there is on the diesel, I'm sure its the same on the petrol model. The pump is pretty powerful, i can't quite remember the figures but it should put out a litre in something like 10 seconds. Just disconnect it at the fuel filter, put a bucket under the pipe and get someone to turn on the ignition. It should fairly **** out. Mine emptied about 80 litres of diesel in about 15 minutes through a blown seal on the filter so I can vouch for its power

Like I said, thats for the diesel, I can't imagine the petrol being any different.

it sounds more like you are getting a vacuum in the tank from a blocked vent pipe, take it for a blast and when it cuts out take your filler cap out, if you hear air rush in it's problem found :D

Thought p38 had pressurised system? When you remove fuel cap you should hear air rush as air escapes?

not sure m8, but if it's getting starved after 5 mles of driving theres something stopping the fuel leaving the tank, if the fuel pumps got an intermittent fault then it's a good un to last virtually the same amount of time every time. pretty sure it aint a pressurised system though

Don't even think about doing the diesel type test on a petrol. System is pressurised to 3.5 bar 51.5 psi. somewhere on the rail there should be a tyre inflator type valve, you have to connect a pressure gauge to that to test pump function. More likely a blocked tank vent.

Sorry wammers, I should have been more specific.
In the diesel the fuel filter is up stream of the fuel pump so is only pressurised by the in tank sender pump, not by the injector pump - hence all the starting problems from air leaking.

I'm really not familiar with the petrol fuel injection so if the petrol system is different then you can only check the sender pump flow rate upstream of the injection system in the low pressure part of the pipework. As for where that starts or finishes, you'll have to ask elsewhere:rolleyes:

I phoned a couple of landrover dealers this morning - both said they have never sold a fuel pump for this model )(2001 model 4.0 petrol.

Just had it ticking over - lasted about 40 mins before stalling. Done a fault mate fault test and no faults showing on ECU.

There is always an air rush when I remove fuel cap. Did it just now and it did seem to be a lot more air flow than normal - couldnt reallt tell which way it was flowing. As I couldnt feel it I think it was inwards.

How do I clean out the the tank vent?

Cheers,
Steve

I've left the cap off - see if it makes a difference; if it does I'll drill a small hole in it...

I wish I could find some way of testing to diagnose the fault...

Steve

Just left it ticking over for about 1hr 20 with the fuel filler cap loose. It did not stall.

Surely this can not be the cure?

I'll take it for a spin and see how it goes...

Think the petrols have a closed circuit breather system for tank fumes. Charcoal filters a stuff. Think there is a valve somewhere that sticks causing a vacuum in the tank. Have a look through RAVE for further info.

was going to take it for a road test.

would not start so problem not solved...aagh.

Sounds like an intermittant pump then. When ignition is turned on pump should run for a few seconds to pressurise system to 3.5 bar for start. If you don't have that initial pressure the injectors won't work.
