hi all, my partners 04 td4 has had problems revving about 3000 rpm(ish) and i was thinking that the intercooler hoses where the culprit having watched them expanding and part collapsing when revving.. so ive ordered some silicon hoses. i was thinking initially that the problem might have been fuel pump related and this morning when the car wouldnt start i noticed the absence of the usual fuel pump humming. ive had a look at it and what im guessing is an earth that clips on to the side is completely rusted through and just feel off with the fuel pump connection part of it stuck inside the connector.

after slamming the door shut the pump suddenly started working even without this wire(earth?) connected, i soldered the connection back on and now the 3 amigos are showing, so i pulled the wire back off the fuel pump, which is still working and the 3 amigos are still showing.

dont know much about the 3 amigos but have read that they are sort of connected to bad earth issues?

any ideas?

That earth wire you speak of is just an extra to dissipate any stray charge that may cause a spark and ignite fuel (have you ever tried to ignite diesel with a spark? Doesn't work).

If your fuel pump dies and needs a bang to set it working, you need a new one, unless there's a dodgy electrical connector somewhere.

If your fiddling displaced an ABS sensor at the right rear wheel that could cause the 3 amigos. Sort the fuel pump, check the ABS connector just above it and then test drive - sometimes the ABS computer needs a short drive to reset fault codes.

cheers for that guineafowl, i didnt even know that there was an abs sensoron the rear wheels! would that be the cylinder shaped connector with the 2 thin round pins do you know?

Have a look at this...

definitely dont remember knocking anything and the only connecter that i randomly pulled apart was the cylindrical blue connector with 2 long pins inside. cheers for the pic-i'll recheck eveything once it has stopped raining..

is there a consensus on after market fuel pumps? ive read various threads where people are paying £300 for them but im very much inclined to buy one online commonly advertised with the filter for around the £50 mark..

The ABS sensor wiring is the blue round connector - did you unplug it with the ignition on?

Always buy genuine LR pump - about £140 on eBay - search on LR023043 - 2 years parts and labour guarantee - well worth the money
