Fuel issues

When I park on an incline for some time my 300 tdi disco starts fine and goes then dies off like there is air in the system usually by pumping the throttle it clears but sometimes cuts out , once cleared it runs fine, the other thing is I have noticed a smell of diesel everytime I start wether on an incline or not but cannot find any evidence of a leak ,,,, any ideas??

When my Britpart lift pump failed (almost instantly),it ruptured the diaphram allowing fuel into camshaft area.This caused a strong smell of fuel until fixed.Increasing oil level on dipstick confirmed it.
Sounds like you have similar or air ingress somewhere on fuel lines-What are your leak off pipes like?

My old one did that if left with the front pointing up hill but started fine if parked pointing down hill .it was the fuel lines

You may get the same syptoms with a bad lift pump mind ,injector leak off pipes could also let air in and there cheap and easy to change so if they look old and crusty id start there
