I wrote a reply and lost it GGGGGGGggggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Remember that slacking injector pipes stops the injectors from firing, and that may mean the noise doesn't happen.

This does NOT mean it is the injector for sure - but it MIGHT be.

I am bothered that slacking the TWO injector pipes on 1 & 2 stops the noise.

I need to think that one out!

Meantime try to BORROW two known good injectors, and swap them for the ones you think affect the problem. 1 & 2.

Run the engine.

If all is well, take out YOUR other two injectors 3 & 4, and fit your 1 & 2 in their place.

Run the engine.

You can work out the rest yourself.

bugger that innit!
an you can never word it exacerly how you did first time!

all i'm going on was what appeared to be a soft ally head, or someone else overtightening all the clamps, pulling the thread out of the head.
one of them cheap, worth lookin at things afore more in depth investigation is carried out.

   OK! still no closer to ending the noise. im down to the last thing to try. THE WATER PUMP. few questions need answering first. 1) does the water pump make a loud clicking/tapping sound? (when broken) 2) will the car still drive perfectly fine? 3) will that explain the LACK of heat through the vents? 4) would a broken pump explain the dirty rusty colour of the coolant?

1) no. and possibly.
2)cant say yes or no really. would need to see it.
3)probably not.
4) probaly not.
does it use water? how oft do you need to top it up?
i think you need to be looking down the blown head gasket route at the mo.
would explain the ticking noise, and shutting up when 2 injectors are loosened,
and lack of heat due to coolant being shoved out. (though you dont mention that bit)

could be head gasket gone feel along the back of the engine between the head and the bulkhead.. mine had gone at the very back and you could feel the hot air/oil being pushed out on compression.

DORA. she live's. it's been a while, but i've moved home, fixed the mysterious noise and for those who are interested. it was a simple fix. INJECTOR WASHER/SEALS. over looked many times. now she's purrs like a 2.25tonne kitten!
