fuel gauge??

alright,
can you help me to work out if my fuel gauge is faulty or not in my '72 2.25 diesel pickup.

i filled it up yesterday to the brim, and have only done 30 miles and its already used a 3rd of a tank??
is this the natural fuel comsumption or do you reacon the guage is faulty? or is the gauge a bit weighted, as in the first half of the gauge goes down much quicker than the second half. (this used to happen in my old mini)

ive checked for leaks and there doesnt seam to be any leaks anywhere??

that sounds about right to me, especially if you've been driving it at "normal" traffic speeds and expecting to keep up with it - unfortuantly it's normally the first half tank that lasts longest (on the guage)

does it smoke much ?

I havnt had a 2.25 but did used to have the 2.5 N/A and that seems a bit much to me!

I used to fill up my N/A with about £60 and would get at least 300 miles from a tank!

thanks for your replies. yer it does smoke a bit, does that mean its running rich??

it never used to smoke, then i had the injection/distributor pump recond, and now it does smoke a bit.

The way I see it the guage is only there as an indication of how much you've got left in the tank. You can't expect it to be accurate and you have to get used to how your particular one reads and use your common sense. So long as it shows you empty at about the right time, ie when the tank is empty, it's working

My last series 3 had a fuel gauge that was similar to yours. The gauge would just touch full when it was full but 10 miles down the road it would show only three quaters of a tank.This would stay there for some seventy miles and then gradually go down.
I did some checking by filling up, recording the mileage and then driving further next time and again recording it.
Although it was a nuisance at first, I got used to it and it did remain consistant.

think im going to see how it goes, and how many miles i get to a full tank. but its a bit worrying, that its now on nearly half and ive only done about 50 miles. how much does it usually cost to fill a tank?? as i filled up wen the gauge was showing empty, and it only cost me £40 to fill up?? i thought that was a bit cheap???
