fuel gauge problems

hi all

my 200tdi defenders fuel gauge seems to have a mind off it own, as soon as the gauge just drops below half a tank, the gauge is empty one miniute, half full the next, its up and down like a yo yo, replaced the sender unit twice all , checked all the electrics,earths ect, all to no avail

anyone got any ideas, or had a similar problem, as you never no how much fuels in, its a real pain

Strange I have the same problem! Still cant figure it out suspect some dodge wiring but dont know best way of testing. cheers
PS now using mileage to work out when to refill as I've run out twice!!
 
the fuel guage itself could be naffed, swap the wiring at the dash so your water temp becomes your fuel guage, (they work the same way inside), it is a quick free test,
 
I'd say it's most likely to be the fuel guage sender in the tank. I took one to bits on my IIA and I'd not be surprised if the Defender one is of similar design. It was a variable resistor which has a wiper running over a coil of wire. If the coil has a break halfway along it's length it could produce this symptom. You could remove the sender from the tank and use a multimeter to test the resistance as you move the lever. You might well find that the meter shows open circuit in the half way mosition - if so get a new one.
 
that would of been my first point too, however spartan said he had swapped it twice. i only presumed that it was for new ones!! could be a loose connection somewhere though

thanks for the replys, i will try what taffi said, i did replace the senders with new ones, whats the chances of two being faulty? you never know though, checked the wiring, it all seems seems fine, maybe the gauge itself is at fault, i honesly dont know, i would have thought the gauge would have worked or just not worked, i replaced the sender in my series landy when i rebuilt it and that works fine no probs at all. its a mystery just cant understand what the problem is

i think i will just have to resort to a dipstick, in the top off the tank:D

I had the same problem with mine it was the connectors on the top of the fuel tank.
I Just cut them off and put new ones on and that solved it.
 
if you have changed your fuel sender, ensure that you have the right wire to the right connection on top. If you used a Britpart sender, the wires fit onto this in a different order to the original land rover one.

I relaced my sender with a Britpart one a couple of months ago and gauge works fine now - I'm glad I did a bit of research on this forum beforehand that gave me the heads up on the wiring, or I would have been somewhat frustrated rather than pleased at an easy fix!!!
