Experience. From what I see, BP don't make anything. They simply re-box other manufacturers stuff.
So if you know what other manufacturers products look like, identifying quality stuff is reasonably easy.
The pipe for my TD4 for instance, is only made my one manufacturer. So it's the same item in the box. Regardless of who's name is on the box. This molded identification code is the clue on this item.

There isn't a limp mode. There's a fault that is stopping it generating full power.
You nees to get the codes read. Any decent OBD2 reader should tell you what's wrong with it.
I had a TD4 in what felt like limp mode with an engine warning light but it was a bad connection on the fuel rail sensor. I was fitting a Ron Box at the time. Try reseating that, you never know your luck. ;)
