Front Wiper Issue followed by a very Long Journey Home!

Evening All,

On my way back from Scotland this week unfortunately my front wipers stopped working during the heavy rain, it was okay to begin with only a couple of miles to the services so tried to get there. Unfortunately it then begun to snow, the viewable gap become smaller and smaller very quickly. Therefore had to pull over on hard shoulder of motorway. Then jumped out and cleared windscreen managing to get to the next junction before it being covered again. Then a very long journey via AA recovery trucks happened. 3 Flat bed lorry changes later, I finally arrived home! All because of some wipers! Would of been ok if it hadn't of been raining! never mind.

So I'm now trying to fix the issue. When you put the lever in any position nothing happens. However you can hear the motor wiring quite loudly from the passenger side. If you leave the level on position 1 or 2 upwards. Then pull the wipers up with your hands (both still linked together by the way) then they will go back to the park/bottom position. So I'm unsure which part is actually failing here. I'm tempted to replace all of it so I know its all been done whilst removing the dash.

Its a TD5 2006 110.

Assuming they were working normally and then suddenly stopped it sounds like everything is still mechanically attached and the fuse hasn't blown. Think I'd be tempted to have a quick check of the electrics first, normally if something is seized the fuse will blow (which it hasn't - or is the wrong size!), you may have issues with a poor earth connection so that the motor can't produce enough power to move the blades without assistance. That said, you said it returned to park position in both positions, assuming it parked correctly that would also imply an electrical issue (did the motor stop making a noise?). Probably not the parking switch as that appears to be doing its job but there are things like the wash/wipe relay that are also involved so don't just look at the obvious.
You should be able to get to the motor without dis-assembling the whole if the dash so I would start there and check wiring, connector and earth cable. If you have a multimeter and a wiring diagram then a few basic checks should be fairly easy.
 
Have to disagree with Kwakerman on this one,if the motor running but the blades are not moving then it has to be a mechanical problem with the linkage from the motor to the wipers.
If what you are hearing is the motor humming then the system is partialy seized and normaly the fuse would blow but not if someone has fitted an over size fuse and then there is a danger of electrical melt down.
The points that seize are the spindels through the bulkhead [easy to lube] and the bottom bearing bush in the wiper motor.[not hard to do] .Kwakerman's point about earthing still holds good.
 
OK, the motor runs and with the wiper arms lifted from the screen they try to work?
I had a somilar problem and the advice that I got was from replace the motor to replace the blades and everything in between!
So let's start with the simple bits first.
Do you have a circlip holding the drive gear shaft in place?
Does the drive gear (mine is white plastic) move in and out (or up and down), depending on how you look at it?
If it does, it sounds as though the circlip is missing!
Mine was temporarily fixed using a washer cut across and gently forced into place with a lump hammer!
I will get round to doing it properly ... one day!
 
From what you have said it can’t be the spindles, wiper drive gears or flexible drive shaft, it has to the drive mechanism in the motor.
 
Te big wheel wot is spinned round by the motor worm wot holds the pushy shovey rod wot spins the wiper spindles to what the wiper arms is attached to has a spindle thingy wot goes frwew the casing and is helded in place wiv a circlip, and if the circlip int there the big wheel goes off the wormy spinny thing an it stops workin!
So check the the circlip is holding the FN spindle in place!!

Op did say they returned to the park position 'Then pull the wipers up with your hands (both still linked together by the way) then they will go back to the park/bottom position' which makes it sound like there is a mechanical connection back to he motor
