Front towbars

Hi Everyone

Just wondering if anyone has a towball fitted on the front of their landy for moving trailers around. I am half tempted to put one on my disco as do quite a lot with trailers and at my new house the driveway is a bit tight for reversing the caravan in and havent got the room to swing the front round on the last little bit which means i have to disconnect it all and push it back with the help of someone.

My main concern is do you actually get better visability? When reversing you have the mirrors to see down either side of the caravan/trailer but if using a front tow ball you can see down the drivers side but do you struggle to see down the passengers side?

I am sure with a normal trailer its fine as you can see the back corners by looking over the trailer itself but with a caravan your view of the back is blocked because its tall.

Any opinions appreciated. (except for the ones people telling me to learn how to reverse properly :lol

I have seen one on a disco , looked home made so do-able. it was by n/s bumper mount

yeah my mates father in law has one on the front of his 90, due to tight driveway, he offset it so he can see each side easier and also put a mirror above the drive on the wall that he can see from the cab

I always put one on the front ! It's realy useful if you use trailers caravans etc !
Also dead easy to drop a rope on if you're stuck in water !!!

Might have to give it a go then for a couple of hours work with the welder should be worth doing.

We got em on the works fenders. Detachable to make em legal or summit. And yep theyre useful.

Yeah detachable is necessary, my mate father in law used massive coach bolts and reinforcement plates on the back of the bumper

Ours pop over where the chasiss rail meets the bumper. With two tightening bolts below.two minute job.

Why does it have to be detachable??

So you dont run people over with it on. Although i dont know thats strictly true.

I'll just run them over with my winch and other sharp items

i've seen them on plenty, they're pretty useful. We had a ball and pin on the front of the series 3 for shunting land rovers and tractors around the garden.
As for having to have detachable ones, I'm not so sure. Lightweights are fine with the extra nato hitch on the bumper where they were designed to be fitted, and if you have a winch and shackles on a front bumper you aren't going to be very pedestrian friendly either.

I see loads of people with tow bars on the front and i know some who dont take them off

I spoke to a friend who is an MOT tester and he says having it fixed permanently is fine and will pass the MOT, its sharp edges that are failures. I will have a look in a couple of weekends and get the welder out to see what i can come up with, pictures to follow.

sharp edges are only a fail if caused by damage or corrosion, you can have anything intentional that you want, my mot tester said I could weld knives to the front of mine if I wanted

when did that change, got a couple of old mate who have to de-spike their biokes every year... they have spikes in the mudguards etc, etc...

Don't know about your legalities, but a front hitch is a very nice addition.
We had them on the front of all our tractors and trucks sinceI can remember. Great for putting a gravity dump grain wagon into the barn.
Also had a ball/drawbar welded on the bucket of the front loader.
