front propping

Mine only started after I fitted 2" lift, complete front axle has been changed (due to another problem) caster corrected radius arms fitted, have borrowed a wide yoke prop - still vibrating, looking to borrow a double cardon prop to see if that cures the problem. I'm actually begining to think the problem is from the rear end and not the front

That sounds exactly like mine!
Have you tried running without a front prop - mine still vibrates.
Thinking of replacing the front prop and removing the rear one now, to see what that does.
Let's keep in touch on this one!

Yes Trwey, I have run it without front prop (after trying wide yoke) still got vibration. What I can't get my head around is, everything ok, no vibration, fit 2" lift, went for test drive hit 48mph started getting vibration, passed 55mph and vibration virtually disappeared ( can still just feel it, but fu*k all to worry about) Next move is to remove lift as its really ****ing me orf.

Whot fu*king circlip?

zackly the same ear mate, except mine is between 35 and 50.
(I think the circlip thing refers to the OP)

it's not unknown for a prop shaft to be unbalanced, either by poor manufacturing or damage in use - I've also known such issues to be "solved" simpling by undoing the prop, rotating it to the next fixing hole and bolting it back up

have you tried rotating it 90 degrees - 180 degrees as well rather than just to the next hole as well ?

removal of front then rear prop should eliminate which one it is - then substitute a known good one, if that still doesn't resolve it I'd be looking again at the CV joints making sure they are centered and totally free to move in all directions as even a small movement restriction in them would induce a shake rattle rumble somewhere in the vehicle

I'm assuming the wheels n tyres are sound true and well balanced ?

one other thing to check for is that the balance weight or weights havent been knocked off - if it's a good quality orginal prop there's a good chance it will have been dynamically balanced in much the same way as wheels + tyres are - look for a little clean area somewhere along the prop indicating where the weight might have been

no - not square holes  the holes being square - ie equally spaced around one PCD. i thought two holes where closer together than the other two, so the prop could only be fitted one way.

My original prop (before the Lift kit) was new, and no vibration, re fitted after lift - vibration. Wide yoke prop, my mates, no vibration on his 90, vibration when fitted to mine. Prop balance weight is intact . CV joints seem fine.

Yes - the prop can only be rotated 180 deg.

In my case, I've tried 3 different props (2 brand new) and no prop. The vibration is still there, so I can confidently say it aint the front prop.
My CV joints are nearly new and I had them out and checked them last friday - they move freely and smoothly and seem OK.
The vibration was there both before and after I had new tyres fitted and the wheels re-balanced.
I reckon that leaves diff, rear prop (but vibration seems to come from the front), T/F box or Injun / gbox mounts as possible sources.

TBH I cannot be sure the vibration is comming from the front. Not only have I changed the front axle, Ive had a new gearbox and changed my disco t/box back to my old Defender one and its still there. Its starting to drive me barmy

Hmm......

Today, whilst working on another problem, I noticed that I had a little play in my swivels.
I have recently replaced my swivel balls and bearings and I set the swivel pre-load as per RAVE, using a spring balance. However, I think that as the new parts have worn in, a little play has crept in.
So, I took the thinnest shim out of each side and re-checked - no discernable play when heaving on the wheel.
Took it for a test drive, and my vibration problem is significantly reduced, although it's still noticable.
I also replaced the track-rod ends and rear steering bar recently, and I think the steering geometry / tracking may be a little out, so I'm going to try that next to see if it makes any further improvement.
