Hey guys..

I need a front diff for my defender which is a 2001 Defender 110 TD5 crew cab. chassis # SALLDHF881A620758.

Will a front diff from a DISCO 300TDI fit my defender TD5?

The chassis of the disco is SALLJGM73VA739246. Im not sure what uear it is I found it at a dismantler and the diff is available. Can some one please check from the Parts catalogue microcat or from elsewhere.

Really appreciate it.

I don't know if this will help but i have a disco diff in the rear and rrc diff in the front of my 200tdi 90 defender. The problem you may have is the number of splines on the end of the halfshaft. I have no idea what your or the disco diff would have.
Hope this is of some help.

you need a 24 spline front diff 3.5:1 ratio. Early one tens had a 4 pin HD diff center and stronger CV's but i think the later TD5 type were the weaker type diff with some strengthened bits. But any 24 spline rover diff will fit. If I could afford it I'd go with a 4 pin unit about £260 second hand. If not then go for any 24 spline rover unit with a 3.5:1 ratio prices vary from £20 to £150 second hand.

@SHEDJIM..

Thanks man it definitely helps!

Jai_land rover..

I got a used diff from a scrap yard, the guy told me its a front diff from a defender but on arrival my mechanic told me that it is a rear diff from an earlier disco... the teeth on crown and pinion are the same but the prop shaft flange is a three bolt one.

Its not in the best of shape so I am going to another city tomorrow for diff hunting so hopefully i shall find the right one. Apparently most diff in that place are from discos.

if you get propper stuck I'm sure somone could ship a known good one to you. Only concern would be that the diff has been run in using one side of the teeth to drive it and now using it in the front will use the other side mabe whine a bit. Can you not use your flange on the new diff to get you going? Or are you looking for a decent one?
Jai

I dont think that can be done... mechanic says it could be but thats not a good way to go about it. plus this unit looks old and my car is pretty new and fit so I dont wanna do it all over again in near future.

I will exhaust all my options here first and then I will think about importing one cuz it really costs a lot. Shipping is a killer!!

Fingers crossed!

SHEDJIM and Jai_land rover!

I got a good used disco diff from a dismantler! I checked the crown and pinion teeth, half shaft splines are correct too! Measured everything as accurately as I could and I believe it would fit perfect! Although the flange on the new diff differs in shape from the older one but the bolt pattern is the same.

Please check out the pictures and let me know if its good enough.

I dont know how to make albums on flickr so the new diff pics are by the name of NEW DIFF.

Looks fine to me.
Check for signs of wear or chips on the teeth. Check for play at the flange. There should be no up/down or side to side movement. If all ok and the flange isn't a completely different shape (square ish to square ish not square to triangle) I would fit it and hope for the best, you will never know if any second hand part is ok untill its fitted.
Good Luck and i hope it sorts your problem.
Cheers Jim.

Thanks SHEDJIM..

The flange on the diff is squarish and on the prop shaft is round. You reckon it would fit?

I'm getting mechanic to fit it all together!

I will update.

Cheers!

SHEDJIM..

Got the diff fitted with new seals and bearings! works absolutely fine! But there is a whining noise when I drive fast in Low range only.

My mechanic says when the diff broke it prolly stressed some bearing/gear in the transfer box so will have to open it up and check it out.

Lets see how that goes.

Glad your diffs sorted.
I wouldnt worry about the whine at speed in low range, its probably not that major if only in low. I would wait and see if the problem gets worse.
I would change the oil in both boxes for some good stuff as this may help and it won't do any harm. I bet its never been changed. Mine was like treacle when i changed it.
Put it in high ratio if you wanna go fast.
Cheers Jim

All oils are always changed on time, it was regularly serviced by the dealer in Dubai till 70K and I changed all oils about 4k kms ago.

I had put GL4 75w80 in the transfer box which was very thinnn, atf in gearbox and GL4 SAE EP 90 in diffs.

Are these the right specification of oils to be used? EP 90 GL4 is no longer available here so I have put EP 90 GL5 in front diff which read on the back that it can be used where GL4 oil is required.

Plus I read somewhere that it is safe to use gl5 in the diffs but not in the transfer box.. is that valid? And what about using the ATF in the gearbox? I couldn't find the oil mentioned in the user manual so I contacted local dealer and they said you can use ATF so I did that and my gear grinds between quick changes and I am seriously not comfy with that.

Would it be safe to use GL4 75W80 in the gearbox? And would it be better to use EP90 (GL5 which says it can be used where GL4 is required) in thr transfer box?

Cheers!

I havn't the foggyest idea what grades of oils to put in all I did was put automatic transmisson fluid in the gearbopx and ep90 in the rest.
It sounds like your landy is allot better maintained than mine ever was. maybe you should get the transfer box checked out afterall it could be better than being left stranded somewhere.
A Quick change in my old bus is a time consuming thing:)

Okay.. so I thought my landy was fit for the road again!! But I was sadly mistaken!

After driving it a lil bit I heard that missing a tooth noise twice again! i dunno where it came from but I reckon it was from the transfer box since I have already replaced the front diff with a pretty decent unit!

My mechanic says that we will have to open up the plate under the transfer box and check out the oil and see if any grinding action has taken place there.

So my question is what transfer box does my landy have? Its a 2001 TD5 110 crew cab. I am worried about the transfer box parts since 300TDIs are very common here and so are the parts for them but my TD5 defender is one of the only three TD5 defenders here.

Do 300 TDIs and TD5s share the transfer box? And what can go wrong with the center diff when the front diff breaks? It also produces a whining noise when in low. Will the star wheels need replacement? I will really appreciate if some one can give me links of the sources for such parts.

Cheers!

ok you NEED to do 2 things,

1st find out what transfer box and what ratio it is and make sure it is that that is damaged. At a complete guess its an LT230 and about 1.4 or 1.22. But you will need to go under and check if it is indeed that ratio. There is a label under the hand brake assy that says the ratio on it. Also there is a version with quiet gears, a T version with taper roller bearings and an R version with roller bearings. You should have a cross drilled input gear if you havent and intend on keeping the landy for some time then its worth doing it slows down the spline wear on the input gear and gearbox output splines that the gear sits on.

Most LT230's are interchangable but may need to swap hand brake assys and the bolt on electrics that the TD5 may need. I have a disco LT230 on my 90 makes the gearing taller in High Range only it makes a stock defender better for cruising on the motorway and better fuel eonomy.

Changes a standard 4cyl 90 1.4:1 to a 1.22:1 TD5 may have taller gearing as stock but I doubt its very much TBH.

2nd find a GOOD replacement unit many shagged units about not too many good ones. I have a good low milage RR one but it will be well out on the gearing.

Thanks Jai for the detailed reply...

Okay so I got under my rig and looked for the tag and found behind the hand brake drum on Tcase buried under loads of gunk so had to clean it with degreaser.

It reads 1.410 ratio and 4WD and thats it. Doesnt tell me which type it is. I looked up the LT 230 and I reckon thats what it is... here a pic of a similar tcase

My question now is that if I go for the 1.22 ratio T-case out of a TD5 Disco 2.. would that have any effects on the low ratio gears??

Or is it that difference between defenders and disco2s lies only in high ratio and low ratio remains the same?

Secondly as far as I know many disco 2s never came with center diff lock.. how can I tell if the T case has CDL just by looking at it?

Cheers!
