hello to all.iam toying with the idea of building a defender from parts.
yup i hear all the sucked in breaths, but its something that ive been wanting to do for a while.
at present i dont own a defender, and my budget wont streatch to a new or even nearly new truck.i dont want to go down the loan/finance road and would like a project to keep me busy:doh:
the plus sides, spread the cost and build to my own spec.do a bloody good job cleaning refurbing parts so finnished job looks like a new landy.
down side, might take ages to finnish, cost hell of a lot more than i expected.
iam fairly ok with the mechanics etc, owned a s3 in the past and had engine/gearbox out a couple of times, moded my 200tdi defender, got it just hoe i wanted it, the sold it:doh:
so what iam basicly saying is,,,,,,,,,,, whats the hidden pitfalls? how do i register the built vehicle with the dvla? would it be a Q plate? would a q plate effect insurance?
i know there are lots of stolen landy bits out there, and wouldnt want a truck made from lots of stolen bits, what is best advice on buying components to avoid stolen bits and to keep oneself from having the truck confiscated by plod?
iam assuming buy and keep recipts?
well there,s probably loads more questions but any advice, either on how to or even noooooooooooo dont do it would be greatly appreciated.

someone here done similar not long ago, have a search on the forum, he put a thread up about his rebuild.

basically he bought a 90 that was falling to bits, but had a chassi and a V5, then the rest, as you probably know its a big mecanno set..

as long as you have a chassi and a V5 document, then the rest you can build up (I think)

cheers ill have a look, i was thinking of building from scratch as i dont have a donner vehicle. think i will need to have the finnished truck looked over by dvla engineer but dont know the full rules.

If you go that route you may/will end up Q plate and the value will be less if you rebuild a known complete wreck will be simpler and cheaper just wait till the winter is over and avoid the snow tax.
