well betty (me 110 csw) just flew through her mot with no advisories :) after her engine and suspension rebuild :) proper nail biting waiting for her to come out! but on the way to and from the test center she was running a bit hot, when i got back i noticed the fan was hardly turning? i had the fan off during her rebuild, is there anyway iv refitted it wrong? or is it likely to be goosed? problem seems to be the fan belts brand new and turning fine, new head gasket etc but the fan is turning with no force at all. litterally just moving and you can easily stop it with your finger tip. any ideas very welcome.
by the way shes a 1990 19j

cheers. j

I found i could stop mine with my hand a while back and it had a fair bit of sideways wobble too(i made sure it was nice and tight) (coupled with my 200tdi getting rather hot) so replaced it with a new bearmach viscous unit, it was only £35 or so and does thew job much better now.

My rad was also buggerd, but the new viscous unit sorted my temp problems out for the majority of my driving. I generally use my 90 for general local driving, but on going on to dual carrige ways and the like shortly after coming off and reducing speed, the reduction in airflow would cause the temp to rise rather quickly, so not long after i also decided to get a new radiator aswell. :)

its done up tight, but perhaps not tight tight? il have a look in morning. yeah with engine running :) but its no worse than sticking your finger in it if you spun it by hand.
was thinking a replacement would be the result :( where did you source yours bearmach unit from?

cheers. j

Im pretty sure i got mine from here, although i have to admit it doesnt mention bearmach in the listing, you could allways message him to find out. However theres plenty on ebay and landy sites and there not too pricey anyway. Before i bought my new replacement one, i did source one from a breakers (thinking i would save a few quid) but despite it feeling much better, after running in it was knackered so i personally wouldnt bother going down that route given most original ones are geting pretty tired now anyway.

before you start it from Cold see if theres any friction when you turn it , if it just spins freely then its knackard . mine went the other way and locked solid .

In the UK a Tdi should be able to run very happily without any fans whatsoever.

True true, ideally with a decent rad and no blockages, although in my case it was a case of those including the fan. To be honest a new fan hub sorted my issues for normal road driving, but i guess close to 20 years of use had taken its toll on other components :(. Still, all good now :)

cheers guys, sounds like its proper f**ked as no resistance at all when engines off.
cheers for the link, just had a look on paddocks and bout same price so think i may as well get one ordered up.
sure iv got a twin electric fan off a golf gti somewhere? might even give that a go tommorow.

I'd go for the electric fan with a manual switch in the cab...allows you to get a bit of heat into the system in the winter and gives you about 5% extra power when you disconnect the viscous fan.
