Hi all,
My Freelander will turn over fine but won't start.
The door locks try to lock/unlock when you turn the key to stage 2 then when you turn the key to start it it will turn over fine but won't catch. It won't even try to catch.
Can anyone help me please.

Have you replaced the timing belt recently?
What year, the older ones have a rotar arm and dizzy cap which could be the problem.
 
I'm not sure when the timing belt was last changed but it's had a head gasket not long ago.
It's a W reg.
Yes it does have a dizzy cap and rotor arm.
 
I'm not sure if it's something that's been getting worse or not.
My Landlord gave me the car as he is getting a new car and doesn't want to spend money on it getting it fixed.
He was going to scrap it but thought I might be able to get it running again as it's too good to scrap.
 
My money is on the fuel pump. A progressive worsening of starting, sounds about right. The fuel filter begin to clog over time. This eventually leads to the fuel pump overheating and failing.

Do the remote fob(s) work OK at locking/unlocking?
When you get in the car, does it beep at you?
When you leave the car, is there a blinking LED on the dash?
Does this LED ever come on and stay on (not blinking)?
When the engine is cranking, is the LED off completely?

How long have you had it, or more to the point, has it ever started for you or has it been like this since you got it?

I'm thinking maybe its imobilised, but the previous owner has earthed the starter to the chassis/battery.
 
Has it ever started since the head gasket was replaced?
Have you taken off the dizzy cap and checked the connections and the rotor arm?

I should learn to read :confused:
Door locks activating with the ignition is the impact switch triggered. Press the button and normal service should resume ;)

That's very odd: the doors try to lock on turning the ignition switch? This is an electrical problem to me. Either a bad earth or a chaffed wire? I'm still getting familiar with these cars, so I don't know whether this is a common problem or not, but clearly door locking is not a normal function of position II.

The doors are trying to unlock when the ignition is on. This as part of the safety system fitted. Basically if the fuel pump circuit has no power (relay, fuse or impact switch) then the CCU powers the door locks open.
So this fault will the fuel pump fuse, relay or the impact switch.
 
Resetting the impact/inertia switch is very simple - so would certainly go with that as a first step! IIRC, it's located on the bulkhead on a 1.8K Freelander.
