Hi all,
New to this site as I bought my Freelander on Monday night and guess what I drove 11 miles down the road to my brothers house and stopped, open up bonnet, steam coming from header bottle! Took the car the following day to the 4x4 centre at the bottom of our road (luckily) and was told to take car back immediately. The private seller is being a total a*** and is sticking fast to not knowing there was a problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks for advice, v. tempting!

So anyway my reliable garage up the road is now taking a look next Thursday. This is the same garage that replaced the Head Gasket on my MGF (hence my user name!)

my luck,

asked the guy if he had ever had a head gasket problem. He tells me that it was only a problem with the 1.8. So silly me let it go. Inexperience of cars in general has let me get in this problem. Kicking myself that I didn't take the header cap of on inspection thought. Did no that one but trusted the family man I was buying from. Kick, Kick, Kick!

ffs, you should have looked on here first.
the KV6 is worse that the 1.8 because of lack of air flow around the rear cylinder bank. it's also much more expensive to repair (engine out to replace HG).
Many garages won't repair them because they fear they will fail again in short time.
You're looking at a bill of at least £1.5k or even up to £4k if you need a new engine.
It's gotta be worth trying really hard to get your money back from the seller.

yeah! Still trying and have emailed him again this afternoon to say I won't let it drop. Surprise, no reply so far. Will ring again tomorrow, what a scum bag. Love the type of car. If I have any luck getting money back can anyone recommend something better.

thanks this is really useful, and gives me hope about the human race! Just taken a look on auto trader and your right about the defender.

30mpg that's fantastic!

Hubby's got a 90 and loves the old girl but not great as a family car so we were looking at something as a work horse and family car to go alongside the old girl. Defender looks like it could be the way to go!

Back to the 90, this went to the garage yesterday and our 4x4 guy tells us we may only have a year left in the old girl as chassis is rotten! Any suggestions on this one.
