Hi all, i am thinking about purchasing a freelander, have seen a couple near to me, both are td4 one a 2001 gs, 78000 miles and the other 2003 es, 97000 miles, was hoping to see them over the next few days, have been looking on other review sights one of the reviews directed here, as he got some good advice, I love the look of the freelander but i am put off by some of the horror stories i have read about, any advice, do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated.

If you include the crank case breather in the service schedule (or fit the BMW item) then the TD4 is the best of the bunch....by a long ways IMHO 
For my money I would get the GS on 78K miles. The ES will be over 100k miles pretty soon and that is a psycological barrier to some buyers and could affect it's resell value.

do a search on here for what to look out for when buying a freelander.
don't listen to the tractor boys scare mongering, all landrovers have faults, but you won't need to be a welder to own a freelander.

ird is intermediate reduction drive , basically the front diff
vcu is vicuous coupling unit , basically allows the freelander to switch from 2wd to 4wd by locking the two props

the only thing to remember is the freelander is basically a car with fwd so you can park on a wet school playing field, or flat grass car park. they arnt designed to take the rough stuff with a couple of ton behind like the disco or deafener are
