HI all,

i posted a while back with a problem with a TD4 freelander. The problem still isnt rectified.
At about 3000RPM the engine begins to knock and jump, sends shocks through the car that you can feel.

The IRD has recently been changed, i suspect a turbo problem but i cannot find the issue.

Would solenoid cause any issues like this, and i noticed that the vac feed to the solenoid is not connected. could this cause the problem? if so where does it connect to on the engine. its connected to the solenoid correctly. but not the other end.

Thanks

PS there is black/blue smoke from the exhaust too :s

can you clarify which solenoid and pipe you are refering to, EGR or Turbo?
A pic would help....

does it do the knocking and banging thing in neutral ?

the solenoid pipe which hangs down the back of the engine is supposed to just hang there, not connected to anything, but it should be fitted with a filter, similar to an in-line fuel filter.

black smoke means its over fuelling, blue smoke means its burning oil. Orange smoke means you have filled up with Tango by mistake.

have you checked/changed the crankcase breather filter by the injectors ? They gomm up pretty bad, and can cause all kinds of problems by pressurising the crankcase, then forcing the dipstick out, finally destroying the turbo.

why was the ird changed ? if it was knackered, was the vcu checked and confirmed as being good before fitting the ird ?

good luck

yes the VCU was checked and changed too.

The solenoid has two pipes not connected. there is one with a filter on it, but the other one going up toward the engine is loose too.

Yes the car does this in neutral too.

Have checked the crankcase breathers, and no oil comes up the dipstick.

Thanks

The boost control solenoid should have three hose connections, one from the vacuum reservoir near the vacuum pump,(battery end of engine bay), one to the turbo actuator and the top one is the vent pipe with the filter attached.

ah yes its the one to the vaccum pump that is not connected. where abouts down the battery end does it go. i cannot see any obvious location for it :s

thanks

It's not connected to the vacuum pump it's connected to the reservoir. It's a ribbed plastic cylinder located next to the pump at the end of the cylinder head.

Woop! yep that fixed it, the line from the solenoid to the vacuum pump chamber was not connected.

Thanks

A brilliant thread which shows the advantage of using the forum before rushing to a "Specialist" some of whom would probably have changed the turbo.
Well done all.D..

Very true Dann. I can imagine some unscrupulous types (tw@ts) rubbing their hands together as they find that disconnected pipe..$$$$£££££ :violent:
