I bought the missus a Sony CDX-GT33U car stereo for Christmas for the second hand Freelander we bought 6 months ago. I bought this because her old car stereo wasn't holding the radio stations to memory and we also wanted to utilise the audio volume and change track/station control that was already fitted to the steering wheel (presumably factory fitted).

Throughout the Sony audio manual there is reference to a Sony Rotary commander RM-X4S but rather than buy this piece of kit we'd like to use the stalk controls already fitted.

Does anyone know if this will work with the new stereo and if so how to wire it up?

Hi Peco!

Got your PM. I'm afraid I can't tell you more about the leads. I found it interesting when I got the car and went searching for a way to use the steering controls.

However, what I really wanted was the cruise control - which isn't working :( and anyway the paddles appear to be broken!

The car is currently in the shop for other reasons. I asked them to see what's wrong with the CC. If they fix it, maybe i'll consider buying new paddles and the lead to control the radio.

I'll be sure to post any news regarding the leads.

I'm still no further forward with this. Rave was not really of any real help. I have tried contacting a few places regarding the cables and which one I require but hit a brick wall.

Next step will need to be taking it to an auto audio specialist to see if they can help. Hopefully not too costly.

I've found the correct cables for my unit along with the necessary patch cable. I'll post a tutorial (with pictures) when I'm done for people to use if they want to do the same.

I replaced my Becker with a Pioneer head unit so I also lost the steering controls. I have now fitted an adapter fron these people

Incartec

along with the module for the specific head unit, your case for Sony it should be a 29-008.

One thing I liked was that the adaptor to integrate the interface also converts the car loom plug to the standard twin plug DIN fitting. This document even shows the plug formats so you can see if it is right.

It was a bit confusing a 1st as you have to get to the rotary interface plug to pick up the signal in the steering column but everything is a plug fit with no splicing required. It means I can easily restore the car back to standard when I sell it if needed. It all works as it should now.

I also fitted a iPod controller for my head unit so I can skip track on the iPod as you would a CD so I havn't bothered with the CD changer.:D

If its any help, I have just taken my Sony stereo out of my Freelander to fit in the Disco but don't think that the stalk control loom I have will fit so may be up for selling it.

What year Freelander is it?

PM me if you are interested and we can sort out whether it is the right one for you. :)
