Freelander starter problem

Hi my v6 Freelander wont start when you turn it over it clicks sounds like the solinoid. Breakdown man arrived put jump leads on gave the starter a whack and it started. He did this 2 or 3 times then it would not start again just a click from the starter!! He annouces starter motors gone so next day fitted new starter (£168) and its just the same only difference is you can start the car by shorting the terminals on the starter ! it does turn the engine over but in very short increments Any ideas anyone before I go completly mad and drive it of the nearest cliff top !!

If it turns over when you short the large terminal to the small one, the problem could be your starter relay or Link 7 (40 amp). (Both in the fuse box under the bonnet )

Well known problem & you can buy rebuild kits for the solenoids cheaply off ebay.
