After buying it secondhand in 2004 my uncle had to do it's Engine Over within 6 months, and eventually ended up turning off the 4wheel drive feature (I don't know for what reason)

Other than the engine he had done, it made numerous visits to workshops over the years for various critical problems. I am hoping here is somebody who can help him fix whatever is currently prohibiting us from using it because all the mechanics are stumped and making him pay for the hapless services.

In the previous 2 weeks he has had it in at the workshop numerous times to do the following
Replaced Clutch
Replaced Plugs
Replaced Plug Wiring
Replaced Petrol Filter
Replaced little plate related to petrol filter? :p

The major problems remained, we used to have trouble getting the gear stick into gear but that seems to be better.

We are stil experiencing a problem with the fuel, when starting up the engine it Idles happily.
I try to give it fuel it doesn't respond well. It feels like its hickupping, and eventually dies not soon after.

My uncle has named it his Spar(Grocery store) car because that's the only distance he can drive without it dying and have to be towed back into town. At least he has a good sense of humor about it all, right?

So when I try flooring it, the engine doesn't react with a burst of power, instead it feels like it's gets a little bit of power and then sounds like it's dying. It gets power and loses power.

I've not much knowledge about cars, hopefully someone here could provide me with a hint on where the problem might lie? As I am usually the person being sent around town with it and am tired of having the car look like a stubborn llama when driving down to the store :p

petrol or diesel mate ?

from your list on your thread, you mensioned petrol filters ? :)

sounds like you need to get shot of it and buy a better one, or another car of some type lol

If it's petrol & manual then I'm guessing it's the dreaded 1.8 K-series model.
Don't do petrol Freelanders myself but wasn't there some problem with throttle bodies on some of these engines?

My uncle did tell me today it is a 1.8 Liter petrol. He said in total the mechanics cost him 1,200 euro this time and the thing that finally solved the problem was when they replaced the petrol pump for 400 euro :)

Hopefully when someone reads this topic in the future he might save on 800 euros and lots of frustrated mechanics trial and error techniques at your expense :>
