Can't really trust that. XC90 is quite good off-road, despite the lack of a low range.

Its very true.Without low range your gonna struggle.Even scoobys have low range!

the freelander was never supposed to be used as an 'all-terrain 4x4'. Its a soft roader.

I agree with Howardo on this ... Most of the smaller 4x4's are simply not built for off-roading at all. They're built to cater for 'the look' and to tow caravans across muddy fields or up farm tracks, or take a family on a picnic just off the beaten track, they were never meant for the gnarlier green-laning or off-roading. Surely the fact that some people can and do offroad them is to their benefit?
Personally I have no problem with freelanders, indeed if I could afford it a FL2 would be on our drive now for towing! (Well, a D3 if we could really afford it!)
Bro has a Nissan X-trail, Bro in law has a Kia Sorrento, Mate has a Hyundai Santa Fe ... all bought to tow their caravans with. All have their merits but to be honest I wouldn't have one of them and would prefer a FL to any of them

I agree, I'd buy a FL2 as a main vehicle and keep my 90 for fun. I like the look of the earlier one and even though they suffer from some poor reliability I still think they have more class than the jab stuff. :doh:
