freelander or not!!

Hi all, Im new to the site and would like to first of all apologise because Im sure youve all heard this before and are sick of answering it.:doh:

I thinking of taking the plunge for a 06 td4 freelander at 7k The problem is although I love the look and drive Ive heard nothing but negative reviews. People are complaining about tax, ins, tyres, servicing blah blah blah.

so Is it such a bad motor and should I look elsewhere or is it a lot of bad press?

50mile round trip per day to work and to use at the weekend for the family and play, Ive seen some nice defenders and I prefer there style but im a novice at price guides and ratings,

I was looking at a 1995 LAND ROVER DEFENDER HARD TOP TDI 62,835 miles for £8900 or a 2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 Td5 Pursuit 7 Seat 5dr Diesel Sw 70,000 miles for £8,650
 
well guys Ive listened to your advice and had a hunt around and have today purchased a 2003 LAND ROVER Discovery 2.5 Td5 ES I know you had mentioned earlier variants but this was the best I could come up with and managed to get it for 5k al be it with 99k on the clock, cheers again for all hel and advice guys

atleast you didnt get the gaylander:D
 
they are very good 4x4s, and because its a permanent 4x4 it rides like its on rails and with all round fully independant suspension it is a joy to drive hard and fast on the roads.
You're disco will rust away long before any VCU needs replacing on a Freelander.

hes bought a disco 2 howardo which dont seem to be rusting as badly/quickly as the series 1.

there seems to be enough common faults with the gaylander without worrying about vcus and irds on top, also with the low ground clearance as standard they're not really that capable are they?

oh and pretty much all lrs from about the last 30 years have permanent 4x4 but it doesnt help them handle any better :p
 
The fully independant suspension helps the hippo's drive no end mind. The freelander is the best road car out of the lot, but not as good as the others when the going gets tough
 
Ride is better than Disco 1 and 2, and as for Defender...

I used to drive a D2 at work, and I own a Defender, and I will quite confidentally say that the Freelander is a better road car, and I think the best and most affordable allrounder. Driven well it is suprisingly capable offroad.

I wonder if anyone will be blind enough to buy my 90... Mechanically sound, new chassis, gearbox, transfer box, axles, etc. but shabbier than a shabby thing.

I love it but it's got to go...

as long as its mechanically sound then you shouldnt have a problem shifting it, just go at it with a roller and a tin of paint ;)

for the lr with the best on road manners my votes with the range rover
