Hi.
I have a 2010 Freelander which is currently sitting on the drive unable to start!
Battery has been charged/changed.
When you press the clutch down and push the start button, all exterior lights illuminate, dash says "running system test" then hazards come on radio peeps, shows HDC fault, engine system fault and 4 wheel drive fault. Loads of clicking of relays and flashing of lights on the dashboard, traction control flashing.
No attempt to start at all! Left Battery off overnight, refitted and no change.
Just about ready to hit it with a big hammer!
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Have you put a volt meter on the battery? If so, what was the voltage on the "charged" standing battery?

Battery charged up to 13.1v
I had just used the vehicle after a 3 day stand, it started first time and drove without issue for about 6 or so mile.
I then turned it off, had a coffee, then no start??

Check all connections to the battery as well as the earths and clean them up. If you get it started again, check the voltage at the battery while running.

A battery can show correct voltage, yet not have enough current to start the vehicle. How old is the battery? Normally they last 4 years tops, so could be the issue.

Can you hear anything clicking in the engine bay when trying to start it? It's not uncommon for the starter contacts to burn out, requiring a replacement contactor set be fitted. A simple test is to put a test light on the starter trigger terminal. If the light comes on when it should be cranking, then it's the starter at fault.

Also it's always worth letting the vehicle system check to complete before pressing the clutch, as system checks while trying to crank the engine can cause data corruption.

Fitted new battery today, checked everything as previously mentioned, and still exactly the same? As soon as the start button is pressed it starts the system check, showing same faults as before.
I have noticed now that the interior lights stay on all the time, previously faded out after a minute or two?
Also, when I try to read fault codes from a BDE reader I have used before on this vehicle, it says that the SRS, EM, ABS, as in all the main units are not installed???

Is there any module that works and communicates with the diagnostics? If yes, you need to find common ground or similar for those that don't work.
Once the ground cable to the chassis had a bad connection and the Evoque behaved like a Christmas tree.
Also don't try to start too much - if there's a bad connection somewhere it can burn the modules or wires because current is going in the "wrong" path.

I have seen your other post and after “googling” same thing, it sounds like Nodge wrote, might be a problem with starting system - starter motor, grounding or maybe something don’t let engine rotating. Could you clear faults and see what DTC's are left after that?
If, after clearing, it's still not communicating with SRS, ABS etc, might be better to have an electrician take a look for the car.

Hi,
Had this issue with my 2007 Freelander TD4. After a great deal of faffing about (new battery, new key* ,yada yada,)I noticed the OBD plug thing was hanging loose. There was a broken wire. Spliced it together. Still no start. So, checked the fuses in the passenger well. I can't remember off hand which one, but do remember it was one with the lightening bolt going through the engine on the cover diagram. The fuse had blown. (10 amp IIR). Put in key, bingo, job done.

*Bloke who turned up to program the new key couldn't connect to the ECU, which is why I decided to check the OBD....

I thought a freelanderer not starting would be thought of as "a result" and more environmentally friendly than burning it.
