Freelander not starting and now getting a saw head

Evening, can anyone please help. I have a 2002 td4 5 door freelander that's doing my head In. Saturday started her up no problems pulled out of the garage to change the coolant. Turned engine off, done coolant as far as poss, went to restart the car and nothing. I got all the lights on the dash as per norm but turn the key to start nothing. So far checked visually the wiring, swapped round relays, battery charged, checked fuses, took starter off and inspected. Nothing. Even brought new starter and fitted tonight as suggested by friends nothing..now my head hurts. Love the car but it's starting to get annoying......please any ideas
 
Nothing, when I fitted the new starter heard a sort of like a spark noise. After that nothing at all. Checked all fuses after that and all look good

I think the clue is in your post.

Something has blown.
Recheck all connections for tightness and shorts.
 
Always disconnect the battery when changing a starter motor. Have you checked your engine bay fuses?
 
Yer went round checking the fuses after fitting new starter, once battery was re connected from fitting starter. Just having a look at the wiring diagram for the starter and the starter relay earth is on the drivers side a pillar so will try and check that out tomorrow night as well as tracing back solenoid feed wire. It's just driving me crazy. Bring on the lighter nights
 
Just a thought but could it be something as simple as the battery?, I know my dad's Astra had that trouble-left home to go shopping starter motor spun a treat on start up yet when he got back in the car to go home nothing not even a slow crank, called out the AA who diagnosed a fooked battery, new one fitted and no probs since!, just a suggestion. :)

It is a fairly new battery (last year) but worth double checking
 
switch ignition on and make sure it is out of gear then get a piece of wire and connect one end to the plus side of the battery and then the other end touch the small contact on the starter, if this starts it then it is your ignition switch .and all you have to do it clean the contacts on the switch .these sometimes arch across and the next time you use it nothing at all only lights on the dash , I did my wife's a few years ago and it is still ok now hope this helps
 
You don't make any mention of lights dimming on the dash when the starter is "engaged" - therefore I'd say the battery is OK, its just the starter is not (or at least not being told to) engage. If nothings happening, I'd also say the problems not a poor earth.

Do you have the remote fob with you? The first time I left my Freelander with the garage, I left the key, but took the remote fob. They rang me to say it wouldn't start. I had to go back with the remote fob for it to start. I'm sure its not a proximity thing, but maybe if its locked with the remote and unlocked with the key it won't start. Its a 99 L Series.

There's a proximity sensor in the ignition barrel and a transmitter in the fob of pre-2000 Freelanders (flat hinged key) It will not start if the fob isn't on the key ring.
Post 2000 Freelanders had the transmitter in the key instead, this means it will start without the fob
 
just a thought,
have you checked the collision immobilizer- red button next to the bulk head behind the battery, you may have knocked it?

Evening all. Back out there again tonight. Tried the wire from the small tab for the relay direct to live on the battery. Brought new heavy duty jump leads and tried jumping. Tried new lead from battery to starter. Double checked all fuses in engine bay. Cleaned up battery to body to engine earth lead. Checked fuel cut off switch . Lights on dash don't dim when key is in start position...all with same result of nothing happening. If anyone is down Somerset way with a can of petrol

Got me thinking. Just popped out and tried spare key as it has the chip in the head of the key. Still nothing.
 
Did it not turn the starter over with the wire straight from the battery?

If not that points to a bad/disconnected earth somewhere. Try a continuity test from a metal part of the engine to the battery negative terminal, you want a nice low reading. It seems somewhere the circuit is broken.
