I have a 2001 Freelander Td4 Auto and occasionally, and only under load, such as when towing a caravan, I hear a knocking noise - rather like a heavy pinking. On lightening the throttle, it goes. The frequency is approx 6 per second when going at around 50mph. It sounds 'rotational'.
My calculations tell me that as the circumference of the wheel is approx 78inches and at 50mph it rotates at 11x per second; too fast to what I hear. The engine doing 2000rpm is 33rps, and as each cylinder 'fires' every other rev, that would mean 16x per second; again too fast.
It can go for days without hearing this at all. Any ideas, anyone?
